Research Problem • Lack of multiple language fluency in the U.S. (less than 20% of people in the U.S. speak another language) • Languages affect all disciplines • Complex puzzle of effective language learning in a non-immersive setting • Online learning • Web 2.0 technologies & their role in classrooms • Teachers cannot make students learn but rather they can only create an environment where language learning can occur

My research • Address the impact of Web 2.0 technologies on the student achievement • Triangulation mixed methods design • Survey data • Pretest and posttest data • Online interviews • Rationale: bring together the strengths of both forms of research to compare the results from two different perspectives.

  6. Data Collection • Site: Midwestern college • Participants: Enrolled in an online beginning or advanced Spanish language course during the Summer 2009 • N=71 participants/Total students: 94 • Participants: Over 80% were taking the course for transfer purposes. Most attended local universities during the academic year.

  7. Pretest Posttest • Beginning Spanish • Web 2.0—17.5% 70.7% • Non-Web 2.0--15.5% 65.2% • Intermediate Spanish • Web 2.0—24.2% 88.1% • Non-Web 2.0—29.2% 85.1%

Interview • How do students use Web 2.0 technology tools? • In what ways, if any, do Web 2.0 tools hinder language learning? • What role/s do students see Web 2.0 tools playing in their classes? • How do students feel about feedback on their web produced activities? • In what ways, if any, do Web 2.0 technologies foster a community in the classroom?

  12. Significance of the Study • The current findings show that student achievement is enhanced by using Web 2.0 technologies • Based on the findings, pedagogical changes can be made to online and on-campus courses to add Web 2.0 technologies
