YMCA History • George Williams joined eleven friends to organize the first Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), a refuge of Bible study and prayer for young men seeking escape from the hazards of life on the streets of London in 1844. • Thomas Valentine Sullivan, working as a marine missionary, founded the first U.S. YMCA after he saw the need to create a safe environment for sailors and merchants in Boston on December 29, 1851.

YMCA Mission • The YMCA is an organization of men, women and children joined together by a shared commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility. • The YMCA’s mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

  4. A.J. McClung • He was a former Mayor of Columbus, Ga • He was a Civil Rights Leader • The A.J. McClung YMCA and the A.J. McClung Football Stadium is named in honor of him.

  6. The kids play on the playground outside the YMCA.

  7. The kids sometimes take field trips. They went to Cici’s Pizza and Lakebottom Park one day.

  8. The kids line up get water after playing hard in the gym or outside.

  9. The kids play musical chairs while instructor, Mrs. Arleta helps them.

  10. Some kids play on the computer during free time.

  11. Some kids play basketball, jump rope, or different games in the gym.

  12. The kids did arts and crafts one day and I helped.

  13. I helped kids make flowers in arts and crafts.

May 31, 2011 • Called Roll • Helped lead stretches and supervised while the kids played soccer • Helped hand out snacks and lunch to kids • Supervised while the kids play jump rope and basketball in the gym. • Supervised while kids calmed down and watched television • Went outside and played with chalk with the kids • Hours worked: 7

  16. June 2, 2011 • Supervised while the kids played in the gym • Handed out snacks to everyone • Watched and give out water while the kids played on the playground • Went on a Field Trip to eat lunch and helped serve the food to the kids • Helped with Musical Chairs. • Hours worked: 5 hours

  17. June 7, 2011 • Helped lead stretches and supervised while the kids played • Served snacks to kids • Watched T.V. before leaving on a Field Trip • Helped serve food at Cici’s Pizza • Watched kids at Lakebottom Park • Helped with Arts and Crafts • Hours Worked: 6 hours

  18. June 22, 2011 • Helped lead stretches and watched the kids play • Helped the kids make arts and crafts. We made flowers and colored in coloring books. • Hours Worked: 3 hours
