What Is Histrionic Personality Disorder? • It’s a disorder that in many cases makes people display theatrical qualities in their everyday life. • Its exhibits dramatic and impulsive behaviors such as getting attention drawn to them.
Associated Features The behavior: they tend to display theatrical qualities also. These types of people want attention. (they enjoy being center of attention) Other things they do to get attention is be flirtatious and seductive.
DSM-IV-TR THIS PERSON …. Is uncomfortable in situation in which he or she is not the center of attention Interaction with others is often characterized by inappropriate sexuality seductive or provocative behavior. Displays rapidly shifting and shallow expressing of emotion Consistently uses physical appearance to draw attention to self. Has a style of speech that is excessively impressionistic and lacking in detail. 6. Shows self dramatization theatricality and exaggerated expression of emotion. 7. Is suggestible, i.e., easily influenced by others or circumstances 8. Considers relationships to be more intimate than they really are.
Diagnosis Features This is given to people that show a pattern of attention seeking: Discomfort when not the center of attention. Interactions characterized by inappropriate sexually seductive or provocative behavior. Rapid shift and shallow expression of emotions. Use of physical appearance to draw attention. Speech that is excessively impressionistic and lacking in detail. Self dramatization, theatricality, and exaggerated expression of emotion. High suggestibility Misinterpretation of relationships as being more intimate than they are.
Etiology The cause is not yet known. “ Also professionals also believe that both learned and inherited factors play a role” The person that has the disorder can learn things from others and try to exaggerate it to their extent.
Prevalence This disorder is more commonly diagnosed in women. “It’s not clear that there who are labeled with histrionic behavior are stereotypically feminine.”
Treatment • There is a way to be treated which is: *going and see a therapist and the therapist has to use cognitive behavior techniques that would help the client. • This will help the client develop more effective ways of approaching problems and situations. *it will help make the client think more precisely.
Prognosis Histrionic personality disorder can improve with psychotherapy. Sometimes medications If left untreated, it can cause conflict in people's personal life. Can prevent them from reaching their potential in their work life.
