What are the Rhodes Scholarships? • Established in the will of Cecil Rhodes in 1902 • Oldest and perhaps most prestigious international post-graduate scholarship in the world • Provides support to study at the University of Oxford
What are the Rhodes Scholarships? • 100 Scholars are selected annually from around the world with 10 scholarships available for Southern Africa • 4 for South Africa-at-large applicants • 1 for Kwazulu-Natal applicants • 1 for Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia and eSwatini(BLMNS) applicants • 1 each for four specific schools and their identified partner schools
Schools’ Scholarships • Alumni from the following schools can apply directly to their schools, or for the SA-at-Large or KZN Scholarships: • Diocesan College, and LEAP 1, St Cyprians, Herschel, St George’s • South African College School, and Sans Souci, Rustenberg Girls’ School • Paul Roos Gymnasium, and Rhenish and Bloemhof Girls’ School • St Andrew’s College, and Diocesan School for Girls (DSG)

Degrees and fields of study permitted • Standard scholarship tenure: 2-years - but can be extended for DPhil (PhD) • Any postgraduate degree can be pursued: • 2-year Master’s • Two 1-year Master’s • DPhil (PhD) • MBA or MFE (Masters in Financial Economics) but only during 2nd year of scholarship
Eligibility Criteria • Residency requirement: lived permanently in and has resided for at least 5 of the prior 10 years immediately preceding application in SA, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia or eSwatini • Age requirement: at least 19 years and younger than 25 years on 1 October 2020 (with permission from Rhodes House, the age limit for medical students may be extended) • Degree requirement: a first degree (i.e. Honours equivalent) by 1 October 2020 with a first or very strong upper second
Selection Criteria “… students who shall be elected to the Scholarships shall not be merely bookworms …. in the election to a Scholarship regard shall be had to (i) literary and scholastic attainments (ii) fondness of and success in … outdoor sports (iii) qualities of … truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship and (iv) exhibition … of moral force of character and of instincts to lead.” That is, young people of outstanding intellect, character, leadership and commitment to service
