  3. Guatemala and Belize • Guatemala- Capital is Guatemala City and is largest in the country • Core of Mayan Civilization- several Mayan languages are still spoken in many rural areas today • Belize- Capital is Belmopan • Was a British Colony until independence in 1981 • Historically Mayan

El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua • El Salvador- Capital is San Salvador • Long history of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions • Honduras- Capital is Tegucigalpa • Mestizo- Indigenous and European • Nicaragua- Capital is Managua • The two largest freshwater lakes in Central America – Lake Managua and Lake Nicaragua
