ABC Analysis ABC Concurrent Release Jan-Jun 13
Assumptions & Notes The analysis on the following pages uses ABC consumer magazine data and therefore is not necessarily reflective of the magazine market in its entirety. ABC data does not provide a complete picture of the market due to the overall number of magazines that audit in any given ABC release period and the consistency at which they do so. Constant Titles • Where reference to Constant Title data is made, with regards to this report, it is done so for magazines which have declared an ABC for each Jan-Jun period over the last 10 years. Excluded data • All ABC analysis will focus only on those magazines that have a UK Newstrade presence. • Therefore any magazine which has a wholly subscription, free or overseas circulation will be excluded as will any duplicate data. • Examples of duplicate data would be any regionally split sales that submit audits for each regional edition and also a national total, this would otherwise be double counting if both figures were included. Naming • Standard trade segment and sub-segment names have been used in the report rather than the Market Sector names in the release. • Additionally, where possible, magazine names commonly used in the trade are used rather than those in the ABC release. If there are any further information requirements then please contact the Trading Operations Centre at TOC@seymour.co.uk
Total Circulation • Year-on-year Total Circulation for Constant Titles has fallen 8.4%, the largest fall for any of the periods shown. • It should be noted that these figures will not take into account any late releasing titles meaning the figure will improve over the next few weeks. • This fall continues the recent trend with all nine of the year-on-year measures shown being declines. • Of the 196 UK Newstrade titles submitting an ABC, 123 are classified as Constant Titles (i.e. have submitted a figure for each of the last 10 Jan-Jun periods). • Despite the overall decline, when the measure is viewed by title there are 28 titles in growth year-on-year. • 18 titles show a growth in excess of 3%.
UK Newstrade • Year-on-year UK Newstrade for Constant Titles has fallen 9.3%. • It should be noted that these figures will not take into account any late releasing titles meaning the figure will improve over the next few weeks. • Of the titles with a UK Newstrade year-on-year figure, one in seven are in growth (28 from 181). • Six segments have at least one title in the Top 20 Risers (see page 5). • Seven of the Top 20 Risers are in Women’s Interests, six come from News & Current Affairs and four are in Children’s Magazines. • 18 of the Top 20 Risers have UK Newstrade average issue figures in excess of 10k showing that there are good sized titles performing well.

Subscription Performance • Total Subscriptions for Constant Titles are down 6.3%. • Total Subscriptions has been an area of strong growth recently but this latest period only sees one segment show growth, TV Listings. This is the case when looking at All Titles and also when looking at Constant Titles. • Total Subscriptions share OF Total Circulation has stayed the same as Jan-Jun 12, 17.9% (see page 10 for more on this). • This share increases further to 20.0% when looking at Constant Titles. • Of the 14 segments included in this latest ABC release eight have at least a quarter of their Total Circulation coming from this category, three of them in excess of 50%.
Overseas Circulation Performance • The year-on-year change for Overseas Circulation Constant Titles is -9.0%. • Overseas Circulation contributes 4.6% to the overall Total Circulation but this is substantially more for certain segments. • The following all have at least 10% of their Total Circulation from this category; Sport (11.7%), Men’s Fashion/Interests and Leisure Interests (both 11.8%), Teenage Magazines (13.6%), Motoring & Motorcycling (17.9%), Computing (21.8%) and Music (30.3%). • 52 titles have at least 10% of their Total Circulation coming from this category. With 159 titles posting an Overseas Circulation this means almost a third of audited titles with a figure in this area have at least 10% coming from this category.
ABC Topline Performance • It can be clearly seen that the number of titles submitting an audit has continued to decrease over the last few years (shown by the orange line). • Comparing the number of UK Newstrade titles to that from 10 years ago shows this has dropped to 62.2% of the number it was (down from 315 to 196). • Three of the other measures displayed have decreased with the same sort of degree, the notable exception being Total Subscriptions which has held up at 89.9%. • If the view is changed to look at Constant Titles, Total Subscriptions increases to 113.6%. • For Constant Titles the indexed figure for Overseas Newstrade is 79.9%, Total Circulation 68.3% and UK Newstrade 60.4%.
Share of ABC Totals • The above shows the Total Circulation figure split into four main categories and shows the share they represent for each of the last five Jan-Jun periods. • The only category to gain share each year is Total Subscriptions (although the figure is the same in the latest two periods shown when looking to 1 decimal place ). This now accounts for 17.9% of Total Circulation in Jan-Jun 13 compared to 15.1% in Jan-Jun 09. • Overseas Newstrade contributes 4.6% in the latest release, with 3.7% coming from Other (up from 3.4% a year before). • The share contributed by UK Newstrade has decreased marginally year-on-year and now contributes 73.8% towards Total Circulation (74.1% the year before). • The Total Subscriptions share of Jan-Jun 13 increases to 20.0% when looking at Constant Titles with UK Newstrade falling to 71.8%.
