  2. Timeline • Over 20 million people left their homes in Europe. During the 1800s and early 1900s, Europe was a place of violent change - many countries were torn apart by the war. • The immigrants came to America between 1892-1924. • People came to America for four reasons: Famine, Wars and unrest, Religious persecution, Desire for a better future. • For the Statue of Liberty. The French donated $250,000 for the statue and the Americans donated $280,000 for pedestal. • The Americas checked the immigrants to see if they have sickness and there symbols were: b-back, f- face, k-hernia, pg-pregnancy, c- conjunctivitis, ft-feet, l- lameness, s-senility, ct- trachoma, sc-scalp, n-neck, h-hart disease, e-eyes, x- mental illness, p-lungs, g-goiter.

  3. Timeline • Millions of people became refugees and they left their homes to escape danger and unfair treatment. • In 1848, a group of Germans tried to change their country government. They where called the “Forty-Eighters.”

  4. Summary Did you know that over 20 million people left their homes in Europe? The reason that so many people left their homes was just to come to America, they came here between 1892 and 1924. The other reason the people came to America was so they could have a better future. The Europe came America for 4 reasons: like Famine, wars and unrest, religious persecution , and desire for a better future. In the 1800s, many Europeans made a better living by farming. If bad weather or disease destroyed the crops , there was nothing to eat. One of the most famous famines happened in Ireland during the 1840s. Irish peasants depended entirely on potatoes for their food. During the 1800s and early 1900s, Europe was a place of violent change. Many counters were tore apart by wars. Millions of people became refugees. They left their homes to escape danger and unfair treatment. In 1848, a group of Germans tried to change their country’s government.

  5. Summary People wanted to be free to practice their religion. This desire for religious freedom has always been an important reason for immigration. Perhaps the biggest reason people came to America was because of people’s future. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many people believed that America was a “Golden Land.” It was a place where anyone could get a decent job, go to a free school, and have plenty to eat. The American hospitals had letter identification for the sick. If an immigrants came to America and didn’t became citizen they were called aliens.
