On the Other Side Here Mauritius
Mauritius??? • 3/5 the size of Rhode Island • 1.2 million people • Speak Creole, French, and English (99%) • Population: • 51% Hindu • 32% Creole • 15 % Muslim • 2% Chinese • Republic since 1968 • Economic growth 6%
Why Mauritius?(Sept 99) • Our love for the Mauritians: • The need of the Word of God and new congregations • Our love for the Church: • The need of a spiritual support • Our love for God: • The need to respond to His Call Idolatry Rose Hill Church
The Church at Rose Hill “(…) There are approximately 35 still meeting at Rose Hill. The ones from Port Louis who separated themselves do not appear to be meeting together. All services are conducted in French, some of the members speak English, all speak Creole” --Ken Wilson, visiting American missionary
Sylvio Salomon and his family Sylvio Corinne “ (…) Sylvio Salomon continues to work with the actual Church. I believe there would not be a Church now in Mauritius without him and his family. No Church financially supports brother Sylvio. He supports himself by his little shop (a grocery-store, one-hour from the building)”--Roland Mohsen, visiting French missionary Marianne David Joan
The 2nd Survey Trip (June 2000)Evaluate the evangelization potential: Remarkable points: • Easy to preach • Friendliness of Mauritians • Transparency for sin • Hospitality • Length of teaching sessions (2 to 3 h.) • Invitations to teach • Easy to organize home Bible studies
1995 Evangelization Campaign • 3 days, 6 Christians • 1000 Homes visited • 750 correspondence courses • 375 finished courses • 100 requests for one-to-one Bible studies THIS REQUEST COULD NOT BE FILLED
The Assemblies of God • Start in 1970, like the Church of Christ • Now: • 260 assemblies • 50 to 400 members each one • 60% of former Hindus • They are looking for bible teachers

The Country Side Three Breasts Mountain
Prayer and Study • We want the Holy Spirit to guide us • Acts 16:6, BBE “6 (…) the Holy Spirit did not let them take the word into Asia; • We are servants of the Word of God • 2 Timothy 4:2, ASV “preach the word; be urgent in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.”

Why Train Leaders? • To follow the example of Christ and Paul • To build a mature Church to: • Glorify God • Be self-perpetuating • Evangelize • Plant Churches
Start a New Church • To not build on the foundation of another • To not destabilize existing native leaders • To accomplish God’s Will

Serving the Community • Touch people with the compassion of Jesus • Be involved in: • Hospital ministry • Feeding the hungry • Clothing the needy • Nurturing marriages and children • Counseling Jer 29:7, "Seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf; for in its welfare you will have welfare."
Related Project • “More than half of the missionaries go back home after the first two years!” “The main problems are not doctrinal, they are personality conflicts and family problems” • 4 team members have experienced team failure. • For a week or two, we want to encourage and feed our "battle fatigued" soldiers: • Listening to them • Praying with them • Making them working with us A Sabbatical Place for Missionaries Bob Grigg a good example. He is fine now!
How long? 5 years seems to be a minimum: • To put into place of the people, structure, working habits (worship, evangelization, community service, edification, mission) • Short but: • Rose Hill Church will help with: • Its experience • Its network of contacts • 5 team members are already bilingual • Yet we do see ourselves staying longer
