  1. Add to Concept #3 (Government) on SLM • Vocabulary: • Representative • Provincial Congress • Declaration of Independence • EQ:What events led to the firing of the first shots of the Revolutionary War? (8.2.2)

While First Continental Congress deals with the Intolerable Acts… • SC calls for another General Meeting, this time to elect delegates to a Provincial Congress • to replace Committee of 99 with a more official organization • The Provincial Congress had more delegates (representatives) from the Low Country than from the Backcountry • The Provincial Congress • raised a militia • issued currency • formed a committee to enforce non-importation • commissioned the writing of a new state constitution • Not everyone liked these decisions – especially backcountry people! Surprise?

  3. Provincial Congress • Sent a delegation to the backcountry in an attempt to make peace • Treaty of Ninety Six Backcountry will remain neutral if there is a fight with Great Britain

  5. SC adopted its first constitution If we aren’t a royal colony – what will our government look like???? • Approved by the Provincial Congress • To be used until the “disagreements” with Great Britain resolved

SC’s 1st Constitution Constitution included: Two house legislature lower house elected by the people upper house elected by the lower house The president (no longer called a governor) elected by the legislature had right to “veto” laws The lowcountry had more representation in the new government than did the backcountry Surprise?

WAR BEGINS – Lexington/Concord (April 19, 1775) APRIL MORNING • 70 militia on the green in Lexington • Militia ordered to break up • Someone fired a shot (1st shots of the Revolution) • 8 Americans died – enraged the militia • British force moved on to Concord • At Concord no weapons found, British begin retreat 20 miles back to Boston • British lost 273 (dead or wounded) Americans less than 100 • Militia surrounded Boston –siege! • Massachusetts stood alone against the British

Jefferson Writes Declaration • Based on the ideas of John Locke • Stated the ideals of democracy including: • Principles of equality • Natural rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness • Purpose of government is to secure those rights • Right of the people to alter or abolish government when the natural rights of people are not protected • Made the case that the king had violated the rights of colonists • notice the declaration keeps stating “He did…” to emphasize the king’s actions in breaking the bonds with his “loyal subjects” Not our fault – He caused all this.
