PROVINCES OF CATALONIA Catalonia is divided into four parts. They are called provinces: Barcelona, Girona, Lleida and Tarragona.

RELIEF OF CATALONIA THE PYRENEES CENTRAL DEPRESSION CATALAN MEDITERRANEAN SYSTEM Catalan relief is characterized by 3 territorial units: the Pyrenees, Catalan Mediterranean System and the Central Depression.
MOUNTAINS , CATALAN COASTS AND RIVERS The highest mountain of our region is Montseny (1,712 m of altitude). The longest river of Catalonia is Ebre. Coasts of Catalonia are: Costa Brava and Costa Daurada.
HISTORY More than 1000 years ago, Catalonia and Aragon were unified and they had these lands.
MORE HISTORY In the 15th century the Castile Kingdomand Aragon Kingdom were unified and formed Spain.
THE FIRST GENERALITAT The proclamation of the Spanish Republic allowed the establishment of La Generalitat de Catalunya (the autonomous government of Catalonia). The presidents were: Francesc Macià and Lluís Companys.
ADMINISTRATION The present president is José Montilla Aguilera Catalonia has also competences in Education, Culture and Health.
ART OF CATALONIA
ROMANESQUE CHURCHES Romanesque art was developed in Western Europe between 10th and 13th centuries. In Catalonia it is characterized by barrel vaults, semicircular arches, big bell towers and cloisters. Santa Maria de Taüll is a Romanesque church and it is a World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO.
MODERNISM Catalan Modernism is an architectural style developed in Catalonia from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century.

ANTONI TÀPIES Tàpies is a painter, sculptor and theoretician of Spanish art. He is one of the famous artists of Abstract Expressionism. Tàpies worked in a style known as “Arte Povera” in which non artistic materials are incorporated into the paintings. Antoni Tàpies Núvol i cadira
SANT JORDI St. George’s Day is on the 23rd of April. Giving a rose and a book is a tradition between couples in this day.
SANT JOAN We celebrate St. John’s festival on the 23rd of June at night. We throw firecrackers and make bonfires. This is a summer solstice celebration.
DIADA DE CATALUNYA We celebrate the national day of Catalonia on the 11th of September.
LA CASTANYADA In All Saint’s Day, the first of November, there is a tradition consisted in toastint chestnuts and eating sweet potatoes and panellets.
OUR LANGUAGE Languages: In Catalonia we study and speak Catalan. We also know Spanish. There are very important writers in Catalan and Spanish languages.

FAUNA The typical animals of Mediterranean forests in Catalonia are: rabbits, wild boars, squirrels, Spanish Ibex, badger, weasel, hedgehog, dormouse, shrew, bat, starling, bee eater, red gurnet, swallow, eagle, goshawk, peregrine falcon, tawny owl, owl, catfish, carp and trout. Dormouse Bee eater

FLORA The Mediterranean forest is typical of Mediterranean climate zones. The characteristics of Mediterranean forests are: evergreen trees, as holm oak and pine, because there aren’t enough water and trees can’t renew all the leaves together each year.
FLORA Flora in highmountains of Catalonia is: pine (Pinus uncinata), juniper (Juniperus nana), rhododendron (Rhododendron ferrugineum), bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi), subalpine pine forests (Pulsatilla-Pinus uncinata)…
