“Feel Good Energy” from v8 Sarah Hoffman Summer 2012 KINE 628- Sports Nutrition
B Vitamins • B Vitamin Complex • Series of 8 individual B Vitamins • Wide variety of functions • Vitamin B6 • Amino acid, glucose and lipid metabolism • Neurotransmitter synthesis • Histamine synthesis • Hemoglobin synthesis and function • Gene expression • Vitamin B12 • Protein synthesis • Red blood cell formation • Nervous system function
Additional Vitamins and Minerals • V8 V-Fusion + Energy’s additional nutrients • Each can provides 1 serving of fruit and vegetables • Vitamin A- Fat-soluble vitamin involved in vision, bone metabolism, haematopoesis, and antioxidant function • Vitamin E- Fat-soluble vitamin most known for antioxidant properties • Vitamin C- Water-soluble vitamin involved serves as antioxidant and coenzyme in collagen synthesis • Calcium- One of the most important minerals in the body- bone health, cell signaling, metabolism • Iron- Mineral crucial to transport of oxygen in blood
Amino Acids • V8 V-Fusion + Energy’s lack of amino acids • L-Carnitine • Primarily role is is fatty acid transport into the mitochondria for energy production • Supplementation was thought to increase lipid oxidation and have a glycogen-sparing effect • Ergogenic effect of carnitinehas limited support • Taurine • Conditionally essential amino acid and one of the most abundantly available intracellular amino acids in the body • Serves several purposes with bile acid formation in the liver for fat absorption being its most important • Excess consumption of both results in excretion
Sweeteners • Sucralose vs. Sucrose • Sucralose • Non-nutritive artificial sweetener that is 600x sweeter than sucrose • Allows for the reduction of overall caloric and carbohydrate intake • Sucrose • AKA table sugar • Disaccharide composed of glucose and fructose • May be one of the most effective pre-workout substances, providing quality carbohydrates for athletes
Stimulants • Caffeine • Indisputably has ergogenic effect for endurance athletes • Appropriate dose for enhanced performance is 3-6 mg/kg • V8 V-Fusion + Energyhas only 80 mg • Guarana • Berry native to Brazil with seeds containing twice the concentration of caffeine as coffee • Acts as an effective stimulant via adenosine receptor blockade • Adding it to V8 V-Fusion + Energy may be a means of obtaining the appropriate caffeine dose
Conclusions • An athlete eating a sufficient amount of calories from whole foods would probably not need an energy drink • V8 V-Fusion + Energy does not provide sufficient amounts of caffeine and cuts out vital carbohydrates • If an endurance athlete, simply supplement with a caffeine pill of the appropriate dose 45 minutes before training or competition • V8 may serve as a better choice due to the nutrients in its vegetable and fruit concentrates compared to the synthetic chemicals provided by other energy drinks
