The Scandal Over Sacraments • Jesus and The Rebuke
Jesus and The Rebuke • The Ritual • Fasting is a time of self-denial. • Fasting was never commanded in the law. • They did everything to make sure everyone else knew they were fasting. • Whiten their faces • Put ashes on their heads • Wear their clothes obvious disarray • Refrain from bathing • Try to look sad and as mournful as possible.
Jesus and The Rebuke • The Rebuke • What is this about? • What is He saying to us today? • God’s commands are binding • The traditions of men are not Biblical and therefore not authoritative and binding. • Be careful that you do not try to squeeze people into your mold or way of thinking. • Don’t be critical of people just because they don’t do things the way you want them done or they don’t make the decisions you want them to make. • It’s not about you, it’s all about God.
The Scandal Over Sacraments • Jesus and The Rebuke • Jesus and His Response
Jesus and His Response • An Explanation • His presence among His people is like that of a bridegroom among His friends. • Expectation • There will come a day when He will be taken away and crucified
The Scandal Over Sacraments • Jesus and The Rebuke • Jesus and His Response • Jesus and His Revelation
Jesus and His Revelation • He did not come to preach a new and improved Judaism • He did not come to reupholster their worn out religion. • He has come to do away with the old and bring something entirely new. • Their religion, their rituals and their rules have absolutely no place in what He was accomplishing.
