WELCOME TO THE TWILIGHT ZONE • You arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled time. The clock ticks ever so slowly. Your mind is racing as you reflect on what you’ve done to prepare, the books you’ve read, the wisdom you’ve received from others. Now, it’s your turn.The door opens and the panel asks you to come in. You meet them. After you’ve told them about yourself you begin to feel totally unprepared.The questions are strange….
PURPOSE OF THE INTERVIEW • To get to know more about you. • To see if you demonstrate the necessary competencies/skills. • To assess your potential to perform effectively in the position. • To see if you are a good fit for the job. • To hear you tell how you have performed various skills. • To assess how your previous experience fits with the position. • To promote yourself.
PREPARING FOR A SUCCESSFUL INTERVIEW Gather as much information as you can about the position. • Review the Position Description and Critical Job Elements. • Find personal examples for as many duties outlined in the Position Description. • Talk to someone in the area for which you are applying. • Review the Industry Website and get a copy of the mission statement or business plan.
PREPARING FOR A SUCCESSFUL INTERVIEW Identify your work experiences that relate to the position. • Prepare, Prepare, Prepare. • Secure a mock interview. • Determine if it is behavioral, technical, or a hybrid. • Interview for the job not a manger or the pay.
PREPARING FOR A SUCCESSFUL INTERVIEW • When contacted for the Interview, ask who is on the interview panel. • Make sure you write down the location and time of the interview, and contact information. Keep the information at work and at home. • Dress professionally whether in person or on the phone.
PREPARING FOR A SUCCESSFUL INTERVIEW On the Day of your Interview: • Make sure you get a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast. • Dress professionally and arrive a few minutes early. • Don’t wear a brand new outfit for the first time. • Make sure you know how to pronounce the name of each panel member.
PREPARING FOR A SUCCESSFUL INTERVIEW • Set yourself up for success. • Set the tone for initial contact. • Be confident.
INTERVIEW QUESTIONS • Did you hear it? • Did you answer it? • What do you do if you have no clue?
INTERVIEW QUESTIONS • Don’t name drop. • Be professional. • Be honest.
BEHAVIORAL VS. TRADITIONAL INTERVIEWS Typical interviews: May be unstructured and inconsistent across interviewees. May use leading questions that hint at the answer the interviewer is seeking from the way it is phrased. Behavioral interviews use: Questions that seek demonstrated examples of behavior from your past experience and concentrate on job related competencies.
WHY BEHAVIORAL INTERVIEWS? Focus on actions & behaviors Specific job skills Demonstrate Skills & Abilities Elicits details of behaviors and outcomes Is more structured and concentrates on areas important to the interviewer Minimizes personal impressions Provides a systematic process Shows a good match between the job & the candidate Does away with hypothetical questions Increased success rate for hiring the right person for the job Decreased bias

Answering Behavioral QuestionsSHARE APPROACH • Situation: Briefly describe. • Hindrance: What’s the obstacle or barrier? • Action: What was done to correct the situation and why? • Result: As a result of your action, what was the outcome? • Evaluation: What did you learn from it?

HOW SKILLS ARE SELECTED & ASSESSED A Subject Matter Expert (SME) - a person or group who understands the job, reviews the position descriptions, critical elements and business measures to identify critical skills for the position. The interviewer or panel uses a numerical scale to indicate the presence of the competency.
PREPARING FOR A SUCCESSFUL INTERVIEW • Never make negative comments regarding a previous position or supervisor/manager. • When your interview is finished, the panel may ask you if you have any thing you would like to add or if you have any questions. Be prepared to say something.
PREPARING FOR A SUCCESSFUL INTERVIEW Make sure you end the interview in a positive way! For example: “I want to thank you for considering me for the position of _______ and if given the opportunity, I know I will do an excellent job”. “Thank you for giving me the opportunity to interview. This position has been a career aspiration of mine for quite some time (or) is a part of my Career Learning Plan.”
PREPARING FOR A SUCCESSFUL INTERVIEW After the Interview: • Reflect on the interview and how well you did and make notes on the things you feel you could have done better. • Even if you are selected for the position ask for feedback on your interview. • Send a personal note or e-mail thanking each member of the interview panel for the opportunity of interviewing.
