    3. 3 1. National Water Resources Infrastructure The NWRI Branch in DWA develops new water resources infrastructure and operates and maintains existing assets for the storage and supply of raw water. Existing infrastructure is grouped into four clusters

Irrigation Schemes Most irrigation schemes are operated and maintained by Water User Associations (WUAs)/Irrigation Boards DWA provides capital for major refurbishment or rehabilitation as the schemes are still owned by the Department DWA operated schemes are for multi–users: domestic/industrial and irrigation Irrigation water released from dams into rivers

    9. 9 2.4 Other Irrigation schemes Skoonspruit and Mooirivier irrigation schemes - Potch Koppies Irrigation scheme – dysfunctional Schemes operated by WUAs: Vaalharts, Orange Riet, Sand Vet, LORWUA, Sundays River Valley, etc

    10. 10 3. Conclusion Most irrigation schemes have reached end of their useful lives Major rehabilitation work required Water tariffs not adequate to fund capital rehabilitation of schemes Water losses from canals
