    1. What is Technology Education? Brian Jernigan UMES CTED 650 Spring 2011

    2. “We live in a society dependent on science and technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology.”    – Carl Sagan

    3. What is Technology Education? Definitions History of Technology Technology Teacher History STEM Maryland Career Clusters 9 Core Technologies Problem Solving Teamwork Creativity

    4. “What do you teach in Tech. Ed?” Technology is the application of knowledge, tools and skills to solve problems and extend human capabilities. I provide an opportunity for students to apply their prior knowledge and build new relationships to the world they live in. I teach kids how think independently, and in teams to solve problems and create. People often ask, “What do you teach in technology education”. My response is simple, I teach kids how think independently, and in teams to solve problems and create. We are a nation increasinlgly dependent on technology. Yet, in spite of this depndance, U.S. society is largely ignorant of the history and fundamental nature of the technology that sustains it. The result is a public that is disengaged from the decisions that are helping shape its technological future. In a country founded on democratic principles, this is a dangerous situation. 5. TECHNOLOGY is Broadly speaking, technology is how people modify the natural world to suit their own purposes. From the Greek word techne, meaning art or craft The diverse collection of processes and knowledge that people use to extend human abilities and to satisfy human needs and wants.

    6. IS TECH ED COMPUTERS ? Computers and the Internet are a part of technology education. Only a small part of our vast human-built world.

    7. IS TECH ED WOODSHOP? We use tools and machines to fabricate products that fit into set criteria and constraints. Production Lab is a more accurate term.

    8. History of Technology Knowledge of the history of technology helps people understand the world around them by seeing how people of all times and places have increased their capability by using their unique skills to innovate, improvise and invent.

    9. History Of Technology

    10. Evolution of the Technology Education Teacher Industrial Age Need for workers in the factories, mines, farms Woodshop, Metalshop, Industrial Arts . . . Information Age Service based economy Teamwork Good Problem Solving Skills Creative

    11. Standards for Technological Literacy Utilizing the national Standard for Technological Literacy to guide instruction is vital if technological educators want to be seen as equal to science, math and engineering.  K – 12 20 Standards (Nature of Tech., Tech. and Society, Design, Abilities for a Technological World, The Designed World)

    12. STEM Science, Technology, Engineering, Math In many forums (including political/governmental and academic) the strength of the STEM workforce is viewed as an indicator of a nation's ability to sustain itself.

    13. Maryland Career Clusters Developed in order to fully prepare students for the 21st century global economy. Maryland education system uses the Career Cluster system to organize teaching and learning.

    15. 9 Core Technologies Bio Technology Electrical Technology Electronics Technology Fluid Technology Materials Technology Mechanical Technology Optical Technology Structural Technology Thermal Technology

    16. Problem Solving (Team and Individual) Design Cycle Define the problem Brainstorm options Evaluate options Make a plan of action Produce a product Evaluate Modify Summarize

    17. Team Work Important part of the working culture and many businesses now look at teamwork skills when evaluating a person for employment. Most companies realize that teamwork is important because either the product is sufficiently complex that it requires a team with multiple skills to produce, and/or a better product will result when a team approach is taken. Also, research tells us that students learn best from tasks that involve doing tasks and involve social interactions.
