Destiny Quest Searching the Library Catalog Part 1 – The Basics
Destiny Quest is a great resource for searching the library catalog and for discovering what we have available. Destiny Quest also allows you to see lists of resources related to your classes, share your reading lists and history with friends, recommend books to friends, read or write reviews of books, and see if a book is currently available or checked out. Using Destiny Quest, you can search our catalog using any web browser. For access while off-campus, just follow the link on the media center’s website.
Here is the Home screen you will see when you first enter Destiny Quest. From this screen you have numerous options, even as a guest.
Perform a quick, simple search of the catalog. Other search options. View or search resource lists related to your classes or grouped by subject matter. See what new releases are available. See the top 10 books checked out by your peers (not available during the summer).
Performing a Simple Search Using the simple search field on the Home screen, we can look for an item by keyword, author, title, etc. For example, to find The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, we might type: OR Then just click the “Go!” button, . . .
which will give us the following screen: Here we can quickly see if a title is currently available. Here we can quickly see the item’s call number. Drag and drop a title image here to add it to a list that you can print later. Here we see our results. Most results will display the title’s cover. You can also narrow your results by clicking on these filter options. More information for each title can be retrieved by interacting with each title’s cover image.
Moving your mouse cursor on top of the title’s image will give you some quick pop-up information on the work. Here we can quickly see current availability, Lexile number, number of pages, and year of publication. These stars show the title’s current rating. Again, we can add the book to a list for later printing. Here we can see a portion of the title’s summary.
Clicking on the title will bring up the full title details with even more information and options.
Use TitlePeek to access more information and profess-ional reviews. Click here to see reviews of the book written by other students. Again, we can add the book to a list for later printing. Very detailed information about the title. Similar items you may also enjoy.
Performing an Advanced Search For a more precise search option, you could click the advanced search tab on the Home screen. This will give you a pop-up form for entering advanced search options.
In this form, you can enter information in as little or as many fields as you want to narrow your search. Here you can enter keywords in various ways or use exact phrasing. Use these + & -buttons to add or subtract more fields. You can make the search remove results that have any words you do not want. Using this drop-down box, you can also specify other details including Lexile number, format, and reading level.
For example, using the following options, we could use the advanced search to find titles related to survival within a Lexile range of 1100-1200, . . .
Browsing Using the Visual Search To browse the library catalog visually, you could click the visual search tab on the Home screen. Here you see you can begin your search by clicking a subject heading. There are actually two panels of headings, but only one is showing. To access the other panel with more subjects, click the “Next” arrow.
