What is Resume? • Self-marketing tool – sells your most relevant competencies • Demonstrates a match between what you have to offer and those requirements • Do NOT • Writing a resume that is a cut & paste • Attempting One-Size Fits All • Weak Objective • Bulleted • Tips • Professional in appearance and content • Highlight strengths and link them to the needs • Research and state your reasons for application • Proofread-read out loud and seek second option

  5. What are competencies? A competency is the term used to describe a cluster of related knowledge, skills, and attributes that contributes to successful performance Why are they important?

Sample competencies- by courses • Statistics for Business • Ability to use software, such as Minitab or Excel, for data analysis • Use of reasoning power, mathematical problem-solving ability, and technical accuracy • Finite Mathematics • Time-management skills and control in high-pressure situations • Organizational Behaviour and Design • Understanding organizational structures, team decision making and presentation skills • An appreciation of ethical challenges and how these effect decision making • Introductory skills needed to lead and manage • Understanding how consultants work to change organizations

Resume Writing FAQs • “What are some tips for writing resume bullets?” • Avoid “responsible for” and “duties included” • Use action verbs: executed, delivered, created… • Use adjectives/adverbs: effective organization… • Include results or outcomes of your actions: “successfully launched new product line, resulting in a 5% increase in revenue”

Resume Writing FAQs “What is a keyword & what does it mean for me?” ‘buzzword’ from the industry important to show knowledge of industry terminology and research “How do I know which of my competencies are best suited for the position?” Read job ad several times, scanning for them Do a quick internet search Look at the company’s staff profiles online

  10. Resume Writing FAQs • “Is it important to have a summary section at the beginning of my resume?” • Possibly the most important section • Highlight your KEY COMPETENCIES • Bulleted and bolded for maximum impact • “Is it okay to have only one resume?” • New industry = new resume

Resume Writing FAQs “What is the purpose of the objective?” • Tells employers what YOU can do for THEM • Eg: I wish to share my extensive range of product marketing, website design and research skills with XXX in a XXX capacity” “What if I have no prior work experience?” • Leverage your academic skills • Leverage your volunteer/extracurricular experiences

  13. Some Final Thoughts… • 2 pages maximum • No Personal Information • Correct mailing address (email – professional address) • Sell your personal brand relevant for the position (4-5 competencies in summary) • Include keywords • Research • Get a second opinion
