Types of Throw-Ins • Designated Spots • Anywhere along the end line
Designated Spot • Used on every throw-in other than after a made or awarded basket • Thrower shall not leave the designated spot until ball is released • Opponents cannot be across the inbound lines until ball is released
Designated Spot • Designated spot is 3 feet wide • No depth restrictions • Thrower must be completely behind the out of bounds line
Designated Spot • Must keep a foot over the spot until the release • No Depth Limit • Player may dribble • 5 Seconds to release the ball Three Foot Spot Unlimited 23

Anywhere on the End line(Throw-In) • When this type of throw-in is used: • Goal Scored • Goal Awarded • Example: Goaltending and Basket Interference • What is allowed by throw-in team: • Throw to teammate outside of boundary • Thrower may move anywhere along the end line within set limit
Anywhere along the end line(Throw-In) • Team retains this privilege until: • Team commits a violation • Team commits a Common Foul • Before throw-in ends • Before Bonus is in effect • When ensuing throw-in spot would have been the end line

Calling Official • Must always inform partner(s) of throw-in spot for all: • Violations • Fouls • Must inform partner(s) of what kind of throw-in if necessary • Information must be given during any stoppage of play
Throw-In Starts • Ball is at the disposal of the thrower • Hand or bounce the ball on the sideline • Five Second Count beings • Always hand the ball to thrower on the end line • IHSA Mechanic Mandate
Throw-In Ends • Passed ball • Touches or is Legally Touched by another player who is located inbounds or out of bounds • Intentional kicking is not a legal touch • Throwing the ball to a player out of bounds is not a legal touch
Throw-In Ends • Alternating Possession • Arrow is reversed immediately when throw-in ends • Violation (by throwing team) • Causes team to lose arrow • Foul (by throwing team) • Team does notlose the arrow
Throw-in Awarded to Wrong Team(7-6-6 New) • Clarified that when the ball is awarded to the wrong team on a throw-in...the mistake must be rectified before the throw-in ends. • This has been the interpretation and stated clearly in the NFHS Basketball Case Book for years – now just stated in the Rules Book.
2010 ClarificationBall at Player’s Disposal(4-4-7d) • Clarified that the ball is at the disposal of a player when: • It is available to him/her after a goal. AND • The official begins the throw-in count.

Throw-In Violations • Thrower shall not leave the designated spot until release of the pass • Ball shall be passed directly into the court from out of bounds so it touches by another player (inbounds or out of bounds) on the court before going out of bounds untouched
Throw-In Violations • The thrown ball shall not be touched by a teammate of the thrower while the ball is on the out of bounds side of the throw-in boundary line plane (except 7-5-7) • Once the throw-in starts, the ball shall be released on a pass directly into the court before 5 seconds have elapsed
Throw-In Violations • Thrower shall not carry the ball onto the court • The thrown ball shall not touch the thrower in the court before it touches or is touched by another player
Throw-In Violations • Thrown ball shall not enter the basket before it touches or is touched by another player • Thrown ball shall not become lodged between the backboard and ring or come to rest on the flange before it touches or is touched by another player
Throw-In Violations • Thrower shall not be replaced by teammate after the ball is at the thrower’s disposal (except 7-5-7) • The opponents of the thrower shall not have any part of his/her person through the inbounds side of the throw-in boundary-line until the ball is released on a throw-in pass • Thrower maypenetrate the throw-in plane

Team Control • Team Control does not exist during a dead ball, throw-in or a jump ball or when the ball is in flight during a try or tap for goal • You cannot have a backcourt violation on a throw in until player control has been established. • When player control is established, team control exists
Clock Starts • When the ball is legally touched inbounds • Kicked or punched ball is not a legal touch • Clock should not start
Timeout Communication • Always before a timeout is reported to the table, communicate where the ball will be placed after the timeout • Communicate • Throw-in spot • Team that will get the ball • Throw in situation that applies (Designated spot or Run the end line)
Resumption Play Procedures(Throw-in Application) • Team A does not make thrower available after: • Timeout • Intermission after quarter • Administering official • Sounds whistle • Place the ball on the floor at throw in spot • Start throw-in 5 second count
Resumption Play Procedures(Throw-in Application) • If violation is on Team A, repeat procedure if Team B if necessary • If this continues Technical Fouls can result • Review Rule 7-5-1 • Do not let this happen!!!!
