  2. What is Roots to Success? • 7 year ESF transnational project proposal focusing on developing Personal Effectiveness and Well Being for: - Young People – aged 11- 19 (mainstream and NEETS) - Adults in Employment • developed by the Welsh Assembly Government in partnership with UNICEF Global & UNICEF UK • Founded on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (& the UN’s Rights Respecting Schools programme) • Anticipated ESF costs for implementation in Wales, approx £8m. • Embryonic stage of development.

  3. Clare Tickell Chief Executive of NCH UK, June 2007 ‘The lack of emotional wellbeing amongst our children and young people is undermining the foundations of any social policy to combat social exclusion, deprivation or lack of social mobility. …The emphasis must change from social class to social skills, self esteem and resilience if we are to give the next generation the chance they deserve.’ … An emotionally well child or young person demonstrates empathy, self awareness, an ability to manage their feelings, motivation and good social skills. A child or young person who has good emotional wellbeing is one that works well, plays well, loves well and expects well.

  4. Vision • To progress the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in Wales/Europe by helping to develop more confident, characterful, effective & skilled young people • To help develop inspiring & ambitious young people able to benefit from the opportunities available in their 21st Century, globalised world • To promote Social Cohesion & Collaboration

  5. Expected Outcomes Improvements for children & young people in terms of: • Confidence • Aspiration/ambition • Sense of control & ability to plan their lives • Communication • Relationships & Collaboration • Mobility & Flexibility • Social Cohesion Greater levels of achievement, skills & wellbeing

  6. Core Principles • Made in Wales/Europe – by and with Young People & relevant stakeholders • Collaborative, inclusive approach to its design & development • Evidence based, trialled & tested • World class standards • ‘Not for Profit’ & Public Value ethos • European & International dimension • Potential for International roll out

  7. Collaboration in Wales Examples: • Unicef Europe/ Unicef Global • Children’s Commissioner • Schools • Funky Dragon • Careers Service • British Council • Voluntary sector groups • Universities (UWIC, Glamorgan, Cambridge)

  8. What will it Involve? • Pre-course Learner Assessment • 22 hr development programme: (eg 2 day residential or 3 days) or in bite sized chunks over a longer period) • Personal Coach for 12 months • Peer Learning Network • Level 1 or 2 qualification • Engagement in a project and/or policy at a local, national, European or international level • Links with the ESF Apprenticeship programme

  9. How could it be Delivered? By Schools via: • PSE & the Healthy Schools agenda • possibly ESDGC, 14-19, Key Skills By the Youth Service, via: • Youth Centres • Young Offending Units • Young People in Care • Young People in PRUs By Employers in the workplace

  10. Crucial role of Facilitators & Personal Coaches • Need to be appropriately selected, trained & supported • Need to ‘walk the talk’ re’ values & behaviours

  11. Crucial role of Organisational Culture • Unless the ethos of the school, youth centre, employer reflects and reinforces the attitudes, behaviours and relationships that Roots to Success is trying to encourage, the programme will have limited impact • Sustainability requires mainstreaming which requires a whole ‘organisation’ approach to respecting rights
