  1. SIX TRAITS RUBRIC Do this now: Take out a sheet of notebook paper. Don’t tear out the holes. You also need to sharpen a pencil. What should we look for to score each trait?

  2. Remember the ice cream sundae? • Your writing is like an ice cream sundae. • Each of the traits is an important part of that sundae.

  3. Get your paper ready: • Draw a line down the middle. • Then draw 2 lines across (the other way). • Now you should have 6 sections. • Label each section with one of the traits: Ideas Organization Voice Word Choice Sentence Fluency Conventions + Presentation Take notes on the following slides. No, you don’t have to write everything, but get about 3 points for each trait.

  4. IDEAS • Ideas are the ice cream – they are the base. • Without Ideas, you don’t have an essay. • If an essay has good Ideas… • It makes sense. • It sounds like the writer knows quite a bit about this topic. • It says something new—or says it in a new way. • It’s packed with details that make me want to keep reading.

  5. Organization • Organization is the dish – it holds it all together. • Organization helps your paper stay in order. • If an essay has good Organization… • The very first line hooks me. • I can follow along without feeling lost. • Everything links back to a main idea. • It doesn’t just STOP. The ending makes sense.

  6. Voice • Voice is the chocolate sauce – it has flavor and personality. • Voice helps the paper become yours. • If an essay has good Voice… • This writing sounds like a real person wrote it. • It sounds like this writer, and no one else. • I feel something when I read this; it makes me laugh or cry or feel SOMETHING. • The writer sounds as if he or she is not just writing to get an assignment done.

  7. Word Choice • Word Choice is the chopped nuts or sprinkles – it makes it sparkle. • Word Choice adds more to the details you give. • If an essay has Word Choice… • Every now and then I say to myself, "That is just the right word here." • Has some very memorable words. • Words are used correctly. • The writer chooses wisely, but isn't afraid to play with words sometimes and take risks! • This writer is NOT trying to impress me…no puffed up, inflated language.

  8. Sentence Fluency • Sentence Fluency is the whipped cream – it makes it smooth. • Sentence Fluency helps your paper flow. • If an essay has Sentence Fluency… • It’s fun to read aloud. It’s easy to read aloud. • Almost every sentence begins in a slightly different way. • Some sentences are long. Some aren’t. • Sentences are not choppy, but they don't go on and on forever and ever either.

  9. Conventions + Presentation • Conventions + Presentation are the cherry on top of the sundae – they put on the finishing touch. • Conventions + Presentation make your paper readable. • If an essay has Conventions + Presentation… • The writing looks clean, edited and polished. Wow! • Punctuation is used correctly. • Strong conventions make reading simple. • There are no big errors in spelling or grammar. • Handwriting and spacing make the paper easy to read.

What’s Next? • You will be making an idea box for homework. • This idea box will help you to review the different parts of each of the six traits of writing. • Use your Six Traits Rubric (the notes you just took) to help you cover the sides of the box. • Write one trait on each side of the box. Then write the different aspects of that trait. • Tomorrow, we’ll cut them out and fold them into boxes.
