Word Choice • Word Choice is the chopped nuts or sprinkles – it makes it sparkle. • Word Choice adds more to the details you give. • If an essay has Word Choice… • Every now and then I say to myself, "That is just the right word here." • Has some very memorable words. • Words are used correctly. • The writer chooses wisely, but isn't afraid to play with words sometimes and take risks! • This writer is NOT trying to impress me…no puffed up, inflated language.
Sentence Fluency • Sentence Fluency is the whipped cream – it makes it smooth. • Sentence Fluency helps your paper flow. • If an essay has Sentence Fluency… • It’s fun to read aloud. It’s easy to read aloud. • Almost every sentence begins in a slightly different way. • Some sentences are long. Some aren’t. • Sentences are not choppy, but they don't go on and on forever and ever either.
Conventions + Presentation • Conventions + Presentation are the cherry on top of the sundae – they put on the finishing touch. • Conventions + Presentation make your paper readable. • If an essay has Conventions + Presentation… • The writing looks clean, edited and polished.
