More Evenly Distributed Participation Through Feedback on a Shared Display Blair Heuer
In many discussions there are those who over-contribute and those who under-contribute.
This means that some people who may have great ideas will go unheard.
DRAWING A shared display that provides feedback regarding individual participation in a discussion will result in a more even distribution of participation.
Prototype Design Input Laptop Server Shared Display
Prototype Design / Input • Wizard of Oz input technique • Add people to discussion • Indicate start and stop by clicking on names • Other methods could be used to automate process
Prototype Design / Server • Communicates with input and output clients via AJAX • Forwards messages from input to output • Stores log for later analysis
Prototype Design / Output Two methods of displaying participation information. 1. Uses bar width and sorting to indicate level of participation. 2. Uses row height to indicate level of participation; does not sort.
The Experiment • Within subjects during four classes of CS376 • Two classes without display and two with display • Class consists of a lecture and presentation followed by usually about thirty minutes of discussion • Approximately seventeen students in classroom • Display projected on large projection screen
Evaluation The class periods with feedback had a more even distribution of participation than those that did not.
Evaluation Individuals who participated less without feedback tended to participate more with feedback and vice versa.
Survey Results Participant survey responses show that most users do not believe that the display was useful, but rather that it was distracting. 78% of respondents said that they did not alter their participation due to the feedback 88% of respondents found the feedback to be intrusive
Conclusion Feedback may result in a more even distribution of participation in discussions. However… The way the feedback is displayed is very important. It may come at a cost to other objectives. There is still much to learn about how to give proper feedback.
Future Work • Explore other methods of displaying feedback • Examine variation of specific axes • Size of display • How to measure of participation • Length, Frequency, Quality
