AFIDEP’s Experiences, Strengths & Needs relating to Capacity Strengthening for Evidence Uptake Dec 9, 2013 Rose N. Oronje AFIDEP 1
AFIDEP in Brief Regional policy think-tank – population change, public health, environment Founded in 2009 Purpose: To contribute to sustainable development by enabling the formulation of policies & programme interventions that are informed by sound research knowledge & evidence
AFIDEP’s Overarching Objectives Generate & synthesize research evidence Enable the utilisation of research evidence in decision-making Strengthen capacity in research evidence generation, synthesis & utilisation
Some Past & Current Projects • Knowledge synthesis • Adolescent SRH in Kenya & Malawi • Status of SRH in East Africa • Drivers of change in contraceptive use • Trends in multi dimensional child wellbeing; • Demographic change and development in Africa (DD) Enabling evidence use National level – MoH, Population secretariats, MPs Regional level – EAC, AU, parliamentary forums International – FP2020 Capacity strengthening Training researchers on evidence synthesis, repackaging for policymakers, data modelling, etc
Strengths Multi-disciplinary team – evidence generation, synthesis & translation and proactive promotion of its use Considerable presence in Kenya & Malawi Capacity building in effective communication of research and evidence based reporting by the media Important connections with policymakers & legislators in Kenya & Malawi
Experience Conducting training workshops for researchers – research methods, repackaging evidence Generating leadership among MPs for evidence use Organizing science cafés Sensitizing & supporting journalists to enable evidence-informed coverage of health issues Staff trained in pedagogical training approaches
What have we learned from these experience? It’s challenging & understanding the challenge is key Understanding context is critical in finding windows of opportunity for evidence uptake Building relationships is critical
Needs Training policymakers in evidence uptake Policymaker-researcher pairing Resource networks Developing research uptake tools
