  7. Outline • Introduction • How to do research? • 5W+1H • How to write a research paper? • Impact Factor, H-index, G-index, i10-index • SCOPUS Selection Criteria • SINTA Selection Criteria and Scoring • Some other ways to compute • Long Term Societal Impact • Increasing Probability of Acceptance • 2 Examples • Pupil Core Values 7

  8. Introduction The start of my research:  M.Eng.: Digital Communications  PhD: Discrete Transforms What I think of “PhD”?  An Expert in one defined area  Ability to conduct independent research Contribution to the defined area  Evidenced by SCI journal publicationTarget I set for my students  3 IEEE Transactions Papers Or at least  1 IEEE Transactions Paper + 2 SCI Journals 8

  9. How to do Research? (1) Define Research Direction / Area First of all, Read and Understand last 3 years journals/conferences in the defined area (and theassociated references)  Start with flagship conferences  Then move on to top tier journals  Write a summary/PPT for every paper read 9

  10. How to do Research? (2) You should have first idea after reading andunderstanding 30-50 papers Using the idea, implement and test and compareperformance with 3 previous best Generally, for PhD you will need to read 150-300papers Contribute 3 ideas significant enough to be accepted/published in IEEE Transactions, and youare done! 10

  11. How to do research? = 5W+1H is the problem we are studying?will the solution be used? What… Where… have contributed in the past?method is metric-superior? Who… Which… previous solutions are not good enough? Why… How… we are going to do it better? 11

  12. How to write a research paper? What… is the problem we are studying?Where… will the solution be used?Who… have contributed in the past?Which… method is metric-superior? Why… previous solutions are not good enough? How… are we better? 12

  13. Is Mathematics important? Depending on the field, generally, Yes. 13

  14. Impact Factor Definition: Citations = number of times that the papers arecited. Publications = number of research papers produced. Source from Wikipedia 14

  15. H-index The definition of theindex is that a scholar with an index of h haspublished h papers eachof which has been citedin other papers at least htimes Source from Wikipedia 15

  16. G-index The index is calculatedbased on the distribution of citations received by agiven researcher's publications, such that given a set of articles ranked in decreasing orderof the number of citationsthat they received, the g-index is the unique largestnumber such that the top garticles received togetherat least g2 citations. Source from Wikipedia 16

  17. i10-index i10 index refers to the number of paper with 10 ormore citations Source from Wikipedia 17

  20. SINTA Scoring Source: http://sinta.ristekdikti.go.id/home/faq#ans3

  21. Some other ways to compute - 1 • Papers • Total Papers is the total number of papers the candidate authored or co-authored • Citations • Total number of citations for all papers that candidates authored or co-authored. • Contributions • Contributions = Papers + Citations Source from Wikipedia 21

  22. Some other ways to compute - 2 • Papers • Total Papers is the total number of papers the candidate authored or co-authored • Weighted Paper, ௐ ଵ஺௨௧௛௢௥ே௨௠௕௘௥ •ௐ • Example, for a paper, author number 1, 𝑃ௐ=1 • And for author number 2, 𝑃ௐ=ଵ . Source from Wikipedia 22

  23. Some other ways to compute - 3 • Another Weighted Paper, ௐ ଵ ଵ஺௨௧௛௢௥ே௨௠௕௘௥்௢௧௔௟஺௨௧௛௢௥௦ •ௐ • Example for a paper with Total Authors = 1, author number 1, 𝑃ௐ=1 • For a paper with Total Authors = 5, author number 1, 𝑃ௐ= ଵ . ହ • And for the same paper Total Authors = 5, author number 2, 𝑃ௐ= ଵ . Source from Wikipedia 23

  24. Long Term Societal Impact - the real impact? Conference vs. Journal Short vs. Long Quantity vs. Quality Journal/Conference vs. Patent Citation vs. $ 24

  25. Increasing Probability of Acceptance  How would you evaluate the quality of a paper interms of: Novelty and Originality  Technical Content and Correctness  Relevance and Timeliness  Quality of Presentation  Quality of Experimental Results Appropriateness to Conference/Journal Importance to the Field  Reference to Prior Work Length 25

  26. Two Examples 1. A paper submitted to Top-Tier Journal 2. A paper submitted to Another Top-Tier Journal But before we do that, no camera and no voice recorder please. 26
