IntroDuction Common core Aligned Curriculum • Benchmark Advance- Covers the Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening Standards for 1st grade • Envision 2.0 Math curriculum- Add/Subtract up to 20 (Equations and strategies), Counting to 120, Place Value, Data, Comparing two digit numbers,Measurement, Time (to the hour and ½ hour), Equal Shares, Shape Attributes
Daily Schedule • 8:05- 8:20 Calendar • 8:20- 9:10 Language Arts • 9:10- 9:40 Language Development Block • 9:45- 10:10 Recess • 10:15-11:15 Math • 11:15- 11:40 Language Arts Continued • 11:40- 12:20 Lunch • 12:30-1:00 Wildcat Lab • 1:00- 1:50 Science, Social Studies or Art • 1:50- 2:20 PE • 2:20 Dismissal
Special Classes • Wildcat Lab • Monday- Technology, Tuesday- iReady, Wednesday/Thursday- Coding, Friday- AR • Students are to follow the wildcat lab policies such as not going on to undesignated websites or they will lose the privilege to use the computers. • Feel free to bring earbuds for your child to use! • PE- M, W, F • Library – Tuesday 9:45- 10:15 • Students will bring home 2 books every week- 1 from the class library and 1 from the school library. They are expected to bring the books to school everyday and they must be returned the following Tuesday.
Assessment, Evaluation and Grading • Students will be given formative and summative assessments in all core subjects to measure their progress toward meeting standards. • Language Arts- A weekly assessment based on grammar, phonological awareness, and reading skills. • I will be giving assessments throughout the year on skills such as sight word identification and identifying and writing letters and their sounds. • Math- A test will be given at the end of each topic in class. Discuss the different types of assessments: • CAASPP – California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress. Starting April 13, Grades 3-6 only. • iReady – both Math and Reading K-5thBOY, MOY, EOY • ELPAC- for ELD students
iReady/ Accelerated Reader • Students will have access to iReady at home with the use of their Clever Login. • Students only have access to AR at school. • Each trimester, AR awards are given to students who have met their AR goals. • I encourage you to read the books your child brings home with them many times throughout the week. • On Friday students can take AR quizzes on the books they have read.
School Policies- Attendance • Absence notes must be sent with returning child, stating type of illness. If seen by a doctor, a doctor’s note should be sent with child. • If child is going to be absent for an extended period of time, communicate with teacher and principal. • Attendance: • Extremely important to student learning! • Late= 1-29 mins. Tardy= 30= mins. • 5 absences per trimester is excessive. 3 tardies is considered as1 absence.
Homework Policy • 1st– 3rd 10-40 minutes • Packets will be sent home Monday in home work folders and must be signed and returned that same Friday • Reading 20 minutes a day • Math page aligned with the lesson of that day • There will be a language arts component added after the first 20 days of school ( I will notify you before I add this!) • Please do not to skip ahead on the math because the pages are aligned with the lessons for each day of the week.
Parent Support • I will notify you of any opportunities to volunteer in the classroom such as helping with art, centers, field trips etc. • School supplies is provided for all students in the class but I have made a class wish list on Amazon if you would like to donate books to the class library or any misc. materials. (Link on Website) • Parent Conferences: I will be sending home a notification on parent conferences sometime in October. • Show parents school’s website: www.gusd.net/Cerritos and your website and walk them through it if you post homework assignments or links for them to use for reference.
Classroom Standards • CLASSROOM STANDARDS • Academic- Student work should be completed neatly and to the best of their ability. • Behavior/Discipline • Students are expected to follow 3 R’s and Class rules list. • Clip chart, ClassDojo points, Table points, Whole class warm fuzzy jar, gold slips • ClassDojo- 25: Bring a book to read to the class, 50: Pick GoNoodle videos for a week during brain breaks, 75: Lunch with teacher, 100: all about me poster share. • Gold slips are given when students are caught following the 3 R’s, students will also receive a weekly slip for keeping an organized desk space and coming to school on time. • Discipline: Yellow- Think about it, Orange- Teacher’s choice, Red- Parent conference (either in person or by phone)
Citizenship/Character and Ethics Project • Explain 3-Way Pledge /Parent Compact, have them sign, and return to you. • Students are expected to follow all classroom rules in order to be safe and be ready to learn. • Discipline problems- Verbal vs. Physical • Explain why action is not acceptable and talk about a better choice for next time. • Speak with Principal • PBIS and Matrix • School-wide Discipline Plan- All major issues (fighting, threatening, bullying etc.) are immediately documented on Q and handled by Mrs. Chavez. Minor issues (not following school or class expectations are not recorded on Q unless behavior is a persistent problem. • Spirit Assemblies are held the last Wednesday of the month at 8:15. Student of the month awards are given to 2 students who demonstrate the Character Trait of the Month (Respect, Self- Discipline, Cooperation etc).
Class Dojo • I am very active on ClassDojo and that is the best way to reach me. I will be sending out many reminders through Dojo so if you have it please check it frequently! If this form of communication does not work for you then please let me know. • I use Dojo as part of a reward/consequence system in the classroom.
Misc. • I am happy to set up a phone conference or in-person conference M-Th from 2:45- 4:45 through phone, email or Dojo. • Student work will get sent home on Fridays.
ELD programs • We offer ELD services and programs • If you have specific questions, please have them schedule an appointment to meet with Sylvia Galvez- Grado to discuss concerns.
Uniforms • Uniforms highly encouraged, but not mandatory. • Dark, light blue or white polos or Cerritos Spirit shirt and navy blue/dark bottoms (jeans okay).
