  4. The systems • The Individual: • Female • 20 • Single • Atheist • Wealthy • Binge drinker, takes Illicit drugs and is a smoker

  5. Microsystem This is the layer closest to the adolescent and is the layer the adolecent has direct contact to. Structures in the microsystem include family, school, neighborhood, or childcare environments. There is a bi-directional influence with the child at this level where behaviour not only affect the child but the people closest to them. At this level, bi-directional influences are strongest and have the greatest impact on the individual.

  7. Mesosystem This layer provides the connection between the structures of the child’s Microsystems. However not in the adolescences Microsystems. The people or places have direct but a formal relationship with the adolescence. Examples: the connection between the child’s teacher and his/her parents, between his/her church and his neighbour.

  9. Exosystem The excosystem identifies the larger social system in which the adolescent does not function directly. The structures in this layer impact the adolescent’s development by interacting with some structure in her microsystem (Berk, 2000). Parent workplace schedules is an examples. The adolescent may not be directly involved at this level, but he/she does feel the positive or negative force.

  11. Macrosystem This layer may be considered the furthest layer in the adolescence's environment. While not being a specific framework, this layer is made of cultural values, customs, and laws (Berk, 2000). The effects of larger principles have a intergrating influence throughout other layers. For example, if it is the belief of the culture that parents should be responsible for raising their children. This can affect the way in which the parent(s) function.

  13. Chronosystem This system goes through time. Changes in time therefore affect different things in different layers which will eventually affect the life, understanding and behaviour of the adolescent.

  14. Chronosytem of Emily Although it is hard to put this in a layer because it runs through all the systems. The change that has occurred in Emily’s life is the death of her mother, who was a big role model in her life. The loss of her mother at a young age has caused her to rebel against her father who re-married, in turn choosing a life of drugs and drinking.
