Notecards • One one side of the card, write your first and last name. • Come up with 5 questions based on your reading of The Giver. Your questions should be: • 1 level 1 • 3 level 2s • 1 level 3 DO NOT WRITE ON THE BACK OF THE CARD. (Thank you! )
Level 1 Questions • Questions can be answered directly from reading the text. • Example: What is the main character's name? • Example: Where is Thomas? • Example: What does Thomas want to be?
Level 2 Questions • Questions can be answered by looking in the text for clues and putting information together. Answers must be inferenced from the text. • Answers require one or more sentences. • Example: Why do the people rely on Thomas' help to get out of The Glade? • Example: Since the beginning, why is Thomas so determined to be a Maze Runner?
Level 3 Questions • Questions are applicable universally; they cannot be answered from the text alone. • Answers require you to think about what you read, what you already know, and how it fits together. • Example: Does good always triumph over evil? • Example: Does everything have to change?
Inner Circle • Serves as the discussion panel for student-generated questions • May use notes • Much provide at least 2 quality responses (extension, cause/effect, elaboration – fully supported by the text) • No moderator or hands raised – listen and “jump in” • Follow rules of courteous discussion • May ask questions of each other only • No interaction with outer circle or teacher
Outer Circle • Responsible for guiding and motivating inner circle discussion (through questions) • Each member should ask at least 1 question • No moderator or hands raised – listen and “jump in” • Follow rules of courteous discussion • No interaction with inner circle or teacher, other than to ask your question • May not respond to the inner circle discussions • Record responses of your inner circle partner
