  1. XVIIIth CONGRESS BULGARIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES 2Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” • 1Geological Institute,1113 Sofia OF THE CARPATHIAN-BALKAN GEOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION New data on the Late Cretaceous tectonics and geodynamics in the eastern parts of the Balkan Peninsula Ivan Zagorchev1, Kristalina Stoykova1, Marin Ivanov2

  2. TRANSMED Transect 3 (Albania – Macedonia – Bulgaria)

  3. Frontal arc: the thickened continental crust of the Morava-Rhodope zone (“plateau”) with anatectic granite magmas in the Pirin and Rhodope Mountains

  4. Late Cretaceous Srednogorie volcanic arc Cenomanian-Turonian: coal-bearing continental deposits, marine transgression (shallow shelf sea) Coniacian-Campanian: deep sea with volcanic activity Maastrichtian: flysch troughs

  5. Apuseni-Banat-Timok-Srednogorie belt (after Popov et al., 2002)

  6. Panagyurishte strip: fluvial lowermost Palaeocene over marine Maastrichtian

  7. Palaeocene – Middle Eocene extensional collapse

  8. SW Bulgaria: complex nappe structure of Mid-Cretaceous age

  9. Babušnica-Foucha Basin: S - Sičevo B - Babušnica M – Melovete R – Radomir F - Foucha

  10. Melovete Stromatolitic limestones; Radomir

  11. Late Oligocene – Early Miocene transtension and Early Miocene transpression

  12. The Babušnica-Foucha basin was rich in diverse and unstable environments. A possible explanation for the extensional onset and evolution of this basin may be sought in its position: a very unstable area situated northwest of the Rhodope massif with its thickened continental crust. During some of the episodes of the Late Cretaceous evolution the basin had close relations to the main Srednogorie basin. In other episodes the Babušnica-Foucha basin was partially or entirely separated from the Srednogorie by cordilleras (the Lyubash-Golo burdo high).
