To Kindergarten at BEE
About Me • This is my 5th year teaching. (2 years Pre-K • and 3rd year in K at BEE) • I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education from Southeastern Louisiana University in 2010. • I have been married to my wonderful husband for 7 years, • we have a 7 month old baby girl!
Curriculum • Students will participate in challenging activities that are developed from the Guaranteed Curriculum of STPSB which is created to align with the new Common Core Curriculum. • Mile deep and inch wide not mile wide and inch deep. • The state assumes that every child in Kindergarten already knows their alphabet. • ELA • We will be reviewing letters, learning the sounds and using letter/sound correspondence in our writing. • Less focus on fiction and more focus on non-fiction/informational text. • Math • Everyday Counts
Dismissal • Please return headbandevery day for at least the next 8 weeks. (Nov 1) • If you need to temporarily change dismissal plans please make sure that you have sent a written note in the “Important Papers” section of the folder or in the “notes” section of the folder. • We have about 120 students getting on about 12 buses (some with 2 loads), walkers going in 3 directions, car line and after care. All with 5 teachers.
Safety Parents must check in through the office when they visit the school and provide their ID/driver’s license. Also, parents are not to come into the building to pick-up children in the afternoon. The car circle must be used for student pick-up and drop off. In the interest of safety, all cars must have an official BEE car line sign in order to pick up students.
Positive Behavior Suport (PBIS) • Be Positive • Be Safe • Be Responsible • Be Respectful • Star Bucks (pretend $1.00 tickets) are used school-wide • and will be given when students are “caught” doing the • right thing. Students will be given opportunities to spend • their Star Bucks to earn privileges.
Classroom Interruptions • Parents must check in with the office before coming to the classroom. All classroom volunteers must have a sticker from the front office to be in the building. • The secretaries will give you one as you sign in at the office. Please return the sticker as you check out. • All messages, books, papers, etc. will be placed in teacher boxes. • Kindergarten doors are to remain locked at all times for your child’s safety.
Homework Homework can be found on the newsletter and on my website. There will be some written homework and some on the computer. Please focus on correct formation of the letters. Bad habits are hard to break. Use pencil unless otherwise specified. If there is homework assigned that does not require paper, it is just on your honor. No need to send in a note or proof. Earobicsusernames and passwords will be assigned.(Settings are preset by teacher) IXL will also be used for math.
Conferences/Communication • One of our goals for this year is to have at least one conference with every student’s parent. At the conference we will discuss assessments, things to work on, behaviors and work habits. • Schedule conferences through office. • Other ways to reach me: • Calling School • Email • Notes in “Parent/Teacher Communication” • section of folder
Treats!!! • Snack Time (No candy, cans, or glass-please) • Birthday Parties You may send treats. We’ll have them around 2:25 p.m. Cupcakes or cookies are easier to pass out rather than cutting a cake. (Please contact me in advance if you plan to send items.) • Two class parties allowed (Christmas and Easter)
Fundraiser • Half of the sale order goes directly to our school as profit, and half of this amount will go directly to our class. (about 25% of orders go to our class) • I hope to buy a large whole-group rug, Literacy center items, & listening station materials. • Join PTA!
Things to Remember • Please send back the head bands. • Send back towels washed on Monday. • Students need a beach towel and king size pillow case. • Practice folding this at home. • Send a healthy snack daily, avoiding snacks containing peanuts. • Report Cards are completed at the end of every quarter. First quarter addresses only social/emotional growth.
JPAMS Again this year, parents of any age students will have access to the computer program – JPAMS. This will allow parents to check attendance and grades at any time. Passwords will be mailed home soon from Central Office. Parents will also be contacted via an automated system for absences, tardies, major discipline issues and failing grades.
Attendance • If your child is absent for any reason, a note from you or from a doctor must be presented and checked by the office so that the absence can be excused. The note must • include the child’s first and last name, • date of the absence, and reason for the • absence. If a note is not received within • 2 days after the absence, the absence • will be recorded as unexcused.
Dress Code • Tennis shoes are the best choice of footwear for school – esp. on P.E days. Our playgrounds have little pebbles and it hurts little feet when sandals are worn. • All shirts must have a collar on them. The school logo is optional but, if one is present, only the super star is allowed. Make sure the color is red and not maroon. • Girls should wear shorts under jumpers and skirts. • You may send a change of school clothes in a gallon sized ziploc bag.
School Spirit Wear Spirit shirts can be purchased through the office for $8.00 and can only be worn on Fridays or on field trips. Spirit socks are also available for purchase for $4.00/pair or 3 pairs for $10.00.
Teaching Philosophy • To provide each child with a quality and fair education in a safe and positive learning environment. • I believe that it is important to teach to the “whole” child. (Cognitive, physical, emotional and social) • Most students should be reading by the endof the school year.
