Reading Specialist swozniak@twinsburg.oh.us.k12 (330) 486-2046 April 11, 2014 “I am not a teacher, but an awakener.” Robert Frost We have been working on different Readers Theaters this month and I am so proud of the growth my students have been making. We do this to practice fluency, build confidence and create a great performance. Fluent comprehending readers become successful students. However, you don’t need a script to practice fluency. Take a favorite book and swap off reading sentences aloud with your child. Read a favorite poem, sing a song as you look at the words, or make a script with your child. This could be from a book or just something that happened to you. I video the children and then replay it for them (more than once as it shows improvement). I told them it is amazing what you think you are doing and what you really do. I also shared that I tape my voice lessons and am always a little surprised or sad that I wasn’t doing the right thing and yes I tell my voice teacher once again, oops I’m wrong, you’re right. The kids think this is hysterical when I share these stories, but I want them to know that all of us have to practice and we all learn from our mistakes. Ms. Wozniak’sReading News This past Wednesday one of my favorite children's authors, Mia Coulton, came to the Twinsburg library. I admit it, I was star struck and I did take my picture with her! Mia Coulton writes books about her dog Danny and now her new puppy Norman. She also writes about her Fish, Lucky the horse and Baby Elephant (no worries, the elephant is fiction, not in her backyard). The first thing I love about her books are that they are just fun. I have no idea how she gets Danny to sit still and put all those costumes on but Mia says Norman is not quite there. She uses actual photographs for all but Baby Elephant (amazing drawings) and my children LOVE them. On top of that, they are leveled so that they can read more rigorous texts as their skills progress. The #1 reason is my children are developing a love of reading due to stories they enjoy and can read on their own and that is what it is all about! Thanks to our Reading Grant Twinsburg, Wilcox and Bissell libraries will also carry Mia Coulton books! Yeah!
