Purpose of the site • Heinz Endowments recognizes the importance of career development • Students and counselors – poor relationship • Helps students to discover their interests • Promotes job opportunities in Southwestern PA
Initial Development Team • Dr. Bob Dove from Lyceum Group to research on career development • Roger Slaytonfrom Elliance – site consultant • Claire Thornburgh as initial project manager and writer • Ray Park – keys2work.com as technical consultant
Why ETC? • After 2 years, Heinz Endowment was still not satisfied with progress • Suzanne Walsh, economic program officer joined Heinz in Sept 2003 • Designers need to understand the meaning of fun and interactivity • Designers need to be closer to the target audience (grade 10 – 12)
Our team’s Goals • Create a site to assist career counselors • A fun, interactive experience • Allow students to explore their interests and possibilities • Design framework that Heinz can build upon • Created “Career InSight” (old Career High)

Art Process • We wanted a different type of interface. • Looked at teen magazines, websites, and at games to find a good style for the web. • Models in Maya exported to Flash
School Buildings 1) Pipeline test • 2) Futuristic • Wanted to see what would appeal to our client. • Showed her other architectural styles for her to choose from.

Colors • Researched popular colors in teen magazines and sites and designer color combinations for the school’s interior. • Presented color choices to our client.

Team Challenges General issues: • Teenagers have different preferences, difficult to please everyone Project Issues: • Too Many cooks • Initial team (Lyceum, Elliance, Claire) + Olivia (current project manager) • Different Time line • ETC is Jan to May (quarter semester, mid semester…) • Others is Jan to Dec • A lot of extra ideas that cannot be implemented immediately
Team Challenges Project Issues: • Communication problem • ETC is creative and technology oriented • Others have difficulty visualizing what we mean by (3D) • Worry about how user “navigate through the site” • Project scope was not define until recently • Client wants to finish the whole site by May • Realize project scale is large, and agreed to create demo in early Feb • High expectations, project existed for 2 years already • Suzanne needs to present to her board from Heinz Endowments in May
