Impact of AUL@Work at GCU Prof. Mike Mannion PVC(I)
GCU’s Primary Contribution to AUL@Work • Voluntary Work & Mentoring Scheme • Psychology Case Study • Longitudinal Study
GCU in 2006/7 • L&T Strategy with employability as goal • Buy-in to WRL in principle but practice was variable • All UG programmes must have an employability strategy but no shared understanding how to do this • Much engagement with employers but mixed across Schools
Organisational Change • WRL is one of 3 goals in L&T Strategy • Real World Project • Voluntary Work Mentoring Scheme • Pedagogical research projects in WRL • New Employability Centre • Alumni Mentoring Scheme • Support for Programme Teams on WRL Strategies • More staff development events on WRL • Presentations about WRL to committees
Conclusion • Project having a transformational impact on the curriculum developments....but • Increased flexibility needed in programmes • to allow generic skills to develop and flourish • to give students choice over WRL opportunities • Need to improve range of non-academic services that provide WRL opportunities
