  5. 5 easy steps to reading a food label • 1) what is the serving size ? • 2) how many calories ? This is how much energy you get from the serving. • 3)Look at the % DV – percent of daily value. It tells you if there is a little or a lot of that nutrient in the serving. A higher number means more. 40% is high, 5% is low • 4) Get less of these • Fat, saturated fat cholesterol • Sodium ( salt) • 5) get more of these carbs,fibre,vitiminA and c, calcium , protein, iron.

On the label 1)Fat 2)saturated fat 3)sodium 1) Glycerides,Glycerol,Esters, shortening, oil 2) beef fat, lard suet,coconut oil Hydrogenated fat and oil, cocoa butter, palm oil powered whole milk solids 3) salk,glutamate baking powder or soda Phosphate Brine soiambisulfate Garlic salt,onionsalt,celerysalt,soy sauce, sodium alginate,benzoate,hydroxide,propionate

Words to watch forAKA also known as …. nutrient AKA …on the label 4) Sugars 4) fructose, sucrose, maltose, lactose Honey Liquid sugar invert sugar syrup, galatose, dextrose, dextrin, corn syrup solids, molasses, raisin syrup. Watch for words ending in “ose” For sugar alcohols watch for words ending in “ol” like sorbitol
