  3. Now Look…. • A.) Percentage of House seats has trended down. • Percentage of electoral votes has also trended down. • B.) Incumbency Advantage – Even though Southerners were voting for Republican Presidential candidates, they continued to vote for incumbent Democrat congressional candidates. • Gerrymandering – district lines created safe seats for Democratic candidates even though there may have been more Republican voters statewide. • State versus National Parties – Because national and state parties are largely independent of one another, to get votes Democratic congressional candidates responded to local interests whereas Democratic presidential candidates responded to a national constituency.

Catholics – They have become less reliable Democrat voters. • Labor Union Members – They have become less reliable Democratic voters, have decreased in number, and thus there are fewer Democratic supporters; have become a smaller percentage of the Democratic voting bloc. • Women – They have become more reliable Democratic voters. • Social Conservatives – Have become more reliable Republican voters, straying from the Democratic Party. I WONDER WHY THAT IS?
