Before You Read the Poem • Background • This poem is about war, it was very popular during World War I. A Canadian doctor named John McCrae wrote it after a friend and former student was killed in battle in western Belgium. At that time the Canadians were fighting the Germans, who wanted to capture Paris.

While You Read the Poem • Let’s have a volunteer read each stanza aloud to the class
After You Read the Poem • Independently complete the activities on pages 77 and 78. • In your own words summarize the poem. • Use your device to find out why Germany wanted to capture Paris. • Find Germany, Great Britain, and France on a map of the world. Next find Belgium and attempt to find Ypres, where the soldiers in the poem were buried. It is near the French border.
