Parle aveceux Talktothem SYNOPSIS Mental illness may well be one of the greatest oversights in Africa, as are the people who suffer them. In Burkina Faso, a small inland country in Western Africa, there are only seven psychiatrists for a population of 16 million people. With scarce pharmaceutical treatments and a cultural background that blames mental maladies on the intervention of hidden forces, healing these people involves constant challenges and unique solutions. For almost two years, the author shared the experience of several patients, their doctors and families; on the streets, during their healing processes and their relapses; and compiling more than 70 hours of footage that are now down to a first rough cut of four hours. THE PROJECT This is not only a neccessary documentary, but one that is already in motion. More than 50% of shooting has already taken place. Two years of intensive work with the patients has opened the doors of their lives to this filmmaker who dared to enter a universe no other filmaker was brave enough to venture into. This project has a Spanish producer who lives in Burkina Faso and who has produced some of the director’s previous works, Luis Marques. Maïmuna Ndiaye
