The Evolution of PUMP Industry Industrial pumps- then and now require a ton of power to operate. In ancient times, this source of power was our hand. Using animals, wind and water turbine power sources came next, concerning the development of power transmission linkages. Steam engines became the main source of power at the end of the 18th century, whereas gas and early oil took over the 19th century. THE BEGINNING Thomas Simpson worked on a reciprocating pump like the James Watts’ rotary motion steam engine in 1790, to drive municipal water-works pumps on the Thames River. This is what led to the formation of Worthington Simpson in 1917. THE GROWTH In the year 1851, John Gwynne filed the first-ever centrifugal pump patent. They were steam engine driven and used mainly for land drainage. The first electric motor pumps finally emerged in the 1900s. Even though electric motors now lead the pump industry because electricity cannot reach all locations. It was not until the late 1980's that we could infinitely vary the speed and performance of an electric motor driven pump and it became industrial pump manufacturers’ main selling point. TODAY In today’s scenario, the main developments in industrial pumps’ technology are driven by the end user's application requirements. This need was consistently met through the many changes to pump power/drive source as new technology became available and was adopted into the pump arena. An average pump manufacturers company tends to follow the trend to match pump performance to system requirements. They are set to continue and probably intensify
their frameworks, particularly as the entire industry runs out of options to improve product efficiency each time they introduce a new one.
