Developing a video showcase of the student experience of research-informed teaching. Dr Lindsey Ferrie and Prof. Jane E. Calvert School of Biomedical Sciences lindsey.ferrie@ncl.ac.uk
Background Context • Newcastle University ranked 8th in UK for Medical Research • Research-based teaching heavily embedded into all degree programmes • Students engage in academic research through numerous opportunities. • Highlights include: • final year honours research project • lab assistant scheme
Student perspective • General lack of knowledge as to what academic research entails and…. • more importantly, what is expected of a student within such research roles. • Student feedback is consistently positive for all research-based schemes. • However many current students report feeling highly apprehensive and worried about their role in research.
Project aims • To capture the student experience of research in a series of reflective video diaries. Credibility, student driven, informative • To use the video diary’s to prepare current students for their research role and to highlight the benefits of such schemes to prospective students.
Lights……. Camera….. Action…… A day in the life of…. a final year research student.
