Two Stroke Engine Converted into Compressed Air Engine Research Project
Purpose and Problem • Problem: Fossil are a depleting source of energy and cause the earth to become more polluted. • Purpose: If a new alternative energy becomes more prevalent then it will limit pollution and dependence on fossil fuels.
Background • Two stroke engines are mostly used in small engines like week eaters and chainsaws
Research Design • A two stroke engine with removed spark plug and mufflers. • Swing check valve adapted to connect with spark plug
Procedures • First connect the compressed air cable to the air compressor. Next you will put a 3 inch pin on top of the piston of the two stroke engine. • Then by using a ¼ inch to 3/8 inch adaptor you will connect a swing check valve to the engine. After the valve is tightly secured you will connect a compressed air nipple using a 3/8 inch to ¼ inch adaptor.
Procedures • Then rotate to piston so that it sit at top dead center. Before starting the engine place the rpm meter at the back of the engine so that the rpm can be measured . • Turn the air compressor on and set the psi to desired level. When the compressor has reached the psi plug the compressed air hose into the compressed air nipple and test the engine
Materials • Two stoke engine • Swing check valve • Pin • Air compressor • Compressed air valve • Compressed air chord • RPM Meter
Engineering Journey • It was discovered that at lower PSI the engine was un-functional. This was because when the compressed air engine released air it would start the engine • But the pressure would be so high that on the other side of the machine (bottom half) there wouldn’t be enough pressure to reopen the valve.
Engineering Journey • Through different research and scientific originality I came up with the most efficient way to run the engine by using a swing check valve. • I tested with compressed air valve, solenoid, spring operated swing check, and regular swing check valves.
Results • After analyzing the data its clear to see that regular gasoline are more efficient. • Even the highest PSI was not even ¼ the amount of the gasoline PSI
Discussion and Conclusion • In conclusion the research hypothesis was accepted. Engineering goals were completed • For future testing I would recommend trying to used a different and more effective valve and testing at PSI’s above 150.
Acknowledgments Iwould like to thank Mr. Hendrix and Mr. Bolen for all the help they have given to me, and guiding me along this rigorous and tedious path of creating a research project last year and now watching my idea come to life before my very eyes. I extend my sincerest gratitude towards them and can honestly and wholeheartedly say that without them nothing I did would be possible.
