Bible Survey Leviticus Theme Holiness
Bible Survey Leviticus Theme Nadab and Abihu Leviticus 10:1-3 Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took their respective firepans, and after putting fire in them, placed incense on it and offered strange fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. 2 And fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD. 3 Then Moses said to Aaron, "It is what the LORD spoke, saying, 'By those who come near Me I will be treated as holy, And before all the people I will be honored.'"
Bible Survey Leviticus Theme Uzzah 2 Samuel 6:3-7 3 They placed the ark of God on a new cart that they might bring it from the house of Abinadab which was on the hill; and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were leading the new cart. 4 So they brought it with the ark of God from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill; and Ahio was walking ahead of the ark . . . 6 But when they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out toward the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen nearly upset it. 7 And the anger of the LORD burned against Uzzah, and God struck him down there for his irreverence; and he died there by the ark of God.
Bible Survey Leviticus Theme King Uzziah 2 Chronicles 26:16-19 16 But when he became strong, his heart was so proud that he acted corruptly, and he was unfaithful to the LORD his God, for he entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense. 17 Then Azariah the priest entered after him and with him eighty priests of the LORD, valiant men. 18 They opposed Uzziah the king and said to him, "It is not for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the LORD, but for the priests, the sons of Aaron who are consecrated to burn incense. Get out of the sanctuary, for you have been unfaithful and will have no honor from the LORD God." 19 But Uzziah, with a censer in his hand for burning incense, was enraged; and while he was enraged with the priests, the leprosy broke out on his forehead before the priests in the house of the LORD, beside the altar of incense.
Bible Survey Leviticus Purpose of Writing To show the Israelites how to live as a high priestly people. Israel was to be God’s sanctified people, the example to the rest of the world of how to experience God’s blessing. Leviticus was meant as Israel’s handbook for that mission.

Hebrews 9:11-12 11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation; 12 and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.

Bible Survey Leviticus Place in the Canon Leviticus is vital to our understanding of the concept of holiness in Israel. Holiness was meant to be a lifestyle, not just a list of legal dos and don’ts. The code of conduct that is contained in Leviticus is completely fulfilled in Christ. This does not mean that it is now abolished (Matt. 5:17) but rather that it now has a deeper meaning for us. We can see in these shadows the substance of Messiah.
