  2. Initiation & Planning – Agenda • Overview of the project management phases • Midterm paper details

  3. SDLC Project Identification & Selection Project Initiation & Planning ** Analysis Logical Design Physical Design Implementation Maintenance

  4. Why Are We Doing This? • Transforms a vague system request document into a tangible project description. • Set up communication plan – SA&D requires effective communication between the systems analysts, users, and management. • Beginning of the Baseline Project Plan.

  5. Project Mgt Process • Project Initiation • Project Planning • Project Execution • Project Close-down

  6. Project initiation steps • Activities to assist in organizing a team to conduct project planning (getting to know you) • 1. • 2. • 3. • 4.

  7. Proj planning steps • Defining clear, discrete activities and the work needed to complete each activity within a single project. • 1. Define the problem • A. • B.

  8. Project planning • 2. Define your objectives • A. • B.

  9. Project Planning continued • 3. Confirm project feasibility • A. • B.

  10. Project Planning continued • 4. Produce the project schedule • A. • B. • C.

  11. Initiation and planning (in a nutshell) • This is the point where a systems analyst begins to play a major role in the systems development process.

  12. Project Execution • 3rd phase in which the plans created in the prior phases are put into action. • Analysis, design, and implementation of SDLC • Managing changes to baseline project plan

  13. Project Execution Steps • Executing the BPP • Monitoring the project progress against the BPP • Managing changes to the BPP • Managing the project workbook • Communicating the project status

  14. Project Close-down • Final phase: focuses on bringing a project to an end. • Assessments • Post Project reviews • Determine strengths and weaknesses of project deliverables • Determine strengths and weaknesses of processes used to create system • Closing the customer contract • Signing on the dotted line

  15. Question • Which of the four phases of the project management process is most challenging? Why?

  16. Homework for next Class period: • Read through your application – Come up with at least 3 things you think are problems that the company/department is facing.

  17. Baseline Project Plan (BPP) • Once all of the prior planning activities have been completed, you will be able to begin developing a baseline project plan. This baseline plan reflects the best estimate of the project’s task and resource requirements and is used to guide the next project phase – analysis. • Will probably end up modifying throughout project life.

  18. BPP • Contains all the info collected during the Project Initiation and Planning and Analysis • Reflects best estimate of project’s scope, benefits, costs, risks, and resource requirements • Specifies general to detailed project activities for the phases of the SDLC • Used by the project selection committee to decide whether the project continues

  19. Midterm Paper • Cover Page • Title, date, group name, members • Table of Contents • Executive Overview • Brief Description of Client & Potential Users

  20. Midterm paper – Project scope • Problem / Opportunity Statement • Project Objectives • Qualitative and Quantitative • Project Description • Narrative & diagrams of existing and future systems • Context-Level Data Flow Diagram

  21. Midterm paper – Justify solution • Project costs and benefits (& analysis), i.e. economic feasibility • Other types of feasibility • Resource requirements

  22. Midterm paper – Project Plan / Mgt Issues • High-Level project schedules • Other things to include: • 1. • 2. • 3.
