  1. Electives Information Session 28th October, 2010 MacNeill Theatre, Hamilton Building

  2. Electives - Introduction • Requirement: 8 weeks prior to 5th Med • Summer after 3rd Med and 4th Med • Minimum 2 weeks in each summer • Students must return on time for new academic year • Can I do an elective after 2nd Med? Yes, but not for credit Yes, but not covered by TCD insurance

  3. Definition • College calendar: Clinical experience in July or August of the 3rd and 4th Medical years obtained in one of the following: A general hospital in this country or abroad An overseas medical centre A laboratory (either service or routine) A clinical research unit A general practice

  4. Procedure I • Students make contact with hospital/clinic • Make own arrangements re: dates, travel, content of elective etc. • Email elective details to claire.doran@tcd.ie (date, location, specialty, supervisor) to ensure credits • For elective recommendation letters, insurance letter etc., email medadmin@tcd.ie

  5. Procedure II • Return elective evaluation form by end August • This is necessary to rise to the next year and for medical council registration • For electives at SJH or AMNCH, make direct contact with the department • The college reserves the right to refuse applications if they are deemed inappropriate or if students are not in good standing

  6. Procedure III • US affiliates Columbia, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, Pennsylvania, Michigan (in planning phase) Electives take place in summer after 4th Med New selection procedure in place (see email) Work ongoing to set up new affiliations • JolyO’Morchoe Scholarship University of Illinois Urbana Champaign Details by email shortly

  7. Helpful Hints • Talk to previous students • Check out the website for previous locations, student reports etc. (under construction) • Consider health and safety abroad • Travel and additional health insurance • Be clear about your level of skills and what others can expect from you
