  2. New Forms of Entertainment Movies become a national pastime- Charlie Chaplin, Al Jolson Radio is a prime source of news and entertainment- KDKA first radio station Americans celebrate sports heroes- Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey, Red Grange, Bobby Jones

  3. New Movements in the Arts • Composers create distinctly American music and dance- Jazz, Louis Armstrong, The Charleston • Writers explore new topics- youth, independence, anti-war, Lost Generation • Artists depict life in the 1920s- Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keefe • Harlem Renaissance flourishes- Langston Hughes, Duke Ellington, Nora Zeale Hurston

Urbanization • Industrialization leads to rapid growth of the cities- for the first time more people now live in cities than in rural areas • African Americans continue to move North- over5 million of the US’s 12 million blacks move from the rural South to Northern cities • Cities struggle with prohibition and organized crime- Al Capone, St Valentines Day Massacre

New Attitudes and Fashion • Changing attitudes toward women allow them greater freedom- Voting, joining workforce • Americans adopt radical new fashions and styles- Flappers, short dresses, short hair for women • Traditional and modern ideas collide- role of women in the home, dating, Fundamentalism vs. teaching of evolution
