Triangles • A triangle is formed by connecting three non-collinear points by three segments • Each point is a vertex of the triangle • Each segment is a side of the triangle • A triangle is named by listing its vertices in order • ∆ABC, ∆CBA, ∆BAC, ∆CAB, ∆BCA, and ∆ACB are all valid names for this triangle • In the triangle at left, BC is the side oppositeA A • B • C •
Triangles • Triangles can be classified according to the measure of their angles • An acute triangle has three acute angles • A right triangle has one right angle • An obtuse triangle has one obtuse angle • An equiangular triangle has three congruent angles
Triangles • Triangles can also be classified according to the lengths of their sides • An equilateral triangle has three congruent sides • An isosceles triangle has at least two congruent sides • Note that this means equilateral triangles are also isosceles • A scalene triangle has no congruent sides
Triangles • Both types of classifications may be used to describe a single triangle • Can you find an acute isosceles triangle? • Can you find an isosceles right triangle? • Can you find an obtuse scalene triangle?
