Challenges for FUTURE • Participation in some APs (especially AICE) Review of membership (SB will review the list prepared by SEC, considering representation by committees and countries) • Incomplete “roadmap” or detailed plan for FUTURE • Note that SICCME has prepared such a plan for their work Intersessional FUTURE WS • Communication amongst Committees and Aps Efficient flow, website • Complexity of linking activities with ICES • Slow introduction of new Expert Groups Roadmap • Everything to do with Outreach/Engagement (SOFE) S-HD
What does FUTURE need from Committees? • Participation on FUTURE APs • Feedback on expert groups, topic sessions, workshops, priorities, symposia, meetings plans etc. • Through your committee chair is best • Recommendations on ways to improve communication/information exchange • Identification of emerging issues relevant to FUTURE
We need a roadmap for FUTURE • Complicated connections between expert groups require well-planned coordination with timeline of products and information flows. • The scope, role, and duration of each expert group should be clearly defined and understood by each within the big picture. • Needs to develop a roadmap with upcoming activities, new expert groups and milestones for 2012-2010
Upcoming events – Intersessional Science Board Meeting • Various options under consideration: • Narrow/internal focus on FUTURE detailed plan/ roadmap? • “start up” workshops on regional climate modelling, human dimensions, end to end modelling? • Some or all of the above? • Considerations: • Priorities • Cost • Integration with ICES • Avoiding “competition” with Yeosu Symposium and other meetings • Final recommendation/determination by Science Board/Governing Council
Upcoming Activities – FUTURE Open Science Meeting • Concept under discussion • Highlight progress of FUTURE • Interim synthesis and review • 2013? • Will we have enough products to show? • Too close to Yeosu Symposium • Competition with other international meetings. e.g., IMBER IMBIZO in Jan 2013. • 2014? • IMBER OSM is being planned • Could be at an annual meeting
FUTURE Website • Contents • Info • Meetings • Documents • Communication • Products • Who will design it? • By when? • Maintenance
2012 Topic Sessions (proposed) priority for FUTURE: • BIO/MEQ: Identifying critical multiple stressors of North Pacific marine ecosystems and indicators to assess their impacts • MEQ/FIS: Social-ecological systems on walleye pollock under changing environment • POC/FUTURE/CLIVAR: Challenges in understanding North Pacific climate variability and change • FIS/POC/ICES: Comparison of impact of multi-decadal climate variability in North Pacific and North Atlantic ecosystems and corresponding teleconnection patterns • MONITOR/FIS/FUTURE: Effects of natural and artificial calamities on marine ecosystems and the scheme for their mitigation • POC/FIS/BIO: Jellyfish in marine ecosystems and their interactions with fish and fisheries • MEQ/FIS: Social-ecological systems on walleye pollock under changing environment: an inter-disciplinary approach 2-3 sessions to be sponsored by FUTURE decided at Science Board
