  1. Fusion GPS ExternalizationPilot Training 1/5/2011 Lydia M. Naylor Research Lead

  2. Project Concept: Fusion GPS Externalization Pilot • Problem/Opportunity • Externalize our patterns and guidelines so that customers can use them when extending their Oracle products • Before we do this we need to understand • How customers will use them • How useful they are to customers • What they will need to be successful • What we would have to provide to make this work • Solution • Run a pilot with a customer who is in the process of extending their Oracle products • Charter • Observation, NOT Design

  3. Fusion GPS Pilot: Research Objectives • What’s the environment the patterns/guidelines are used in • LLNL’s design + development process, project goals, user roles • What patterns/guidelines do you use • How do you use them • How useful are they • Developers feedback • Our assessment of design • End user feedback on design • What do you need to be successful • What information is missing? • What type of training/support do you need to use the information? • Would additional design or usability support be useful? • What do we need to provide to make this work

  4. Fusion GPS Pilot: Research Project Scope • Support 3 LLNL development projects • Representing a mix of experienced and new JDev/ADF developers • Timing • Start: early Jan 2011 (Today) • End: Determined by quality/quantity of data collected and development project duration • What we will provide LLNL • External secured pilot site of Fusion GPS (guidelines, patterns, and standards) • GPS forum and support • GPS training • No design

  5. The Core Team • Lydia Naylor, Manager User Experience • Research lead coordinating the pilot study, check in meetings, data analysis and reporting • Somnath Lokesh, Senior Usability Engineer • Manning the forum, running check-in meetings, data analysis and reporting • Kristin Desmond, Senior Manager User Experience • Katy Massucco, Senior Manager User Experience • George Hackman, Jr., Senior Director User Experience

  6. Training Overview • Project Goals (:10) • Fusion Design Concepts (:30) • How to Use the Fusion GPS Site (:30) • Project Process (:30)

  15. Of Special Note • Majority of design patterns and guidelines have been updated to reflect the most recent Fusion designs • Small number could not be updated in time for the pilot • May have some inaccuracies • If you need to use these documents, let us know via the forum

  16. Project Process:Your Mission – Provide Feedback

  17. How to Provide Feedback • Orientation meeting • Keep a “Daily” Log • Provide feedback on patterns and guidelines you use • Get Answers to Your Questions • Request Office Hours • Attend Meetings • Usability Evaluation

  18. Orientation Meeting • Walk us through your application • User, their goals and tasks • Where are you in the project • What are your goals • Will set this up with Chuck after today’s meeting

  19. Keep a “Daily” Log • Every time you access the site log your experience • Log template = Excel spreadsheet • link available from Home page • Captures • What goal were you trying to accomplish? • What patterns or guidelines did you reference? Which did you use? • If you needed help, how did you get it? • Feedback • Every week • Open the log template and save a copy with your last name and the coming Friday’s date.Example: Naylor_Jan7_2010 • Each Friday send the week’s log to somnath.lokesh@oracle.com by end of day

  20. Provide Feedback on Each Pattern and Guideline You Use • Every time you use a Fusion GPS document, follow the Pattern/Guideline Feedback Survey link (in the global area of the site) • Complete a few short questions on your experience • Which document did you use? • How useful was the pattern/guideline , and why? • What’s missing? • Link goes to Vovici.com – external survey tool • Fill out the entire survey • Don’t forget to hit “Submit” • Can fill it out multiple times for same document • You may use the same document for different purposes or revisit it and have more feedback

  21. Get Answers to Your Questions • Non-technical questions on the patterns and guidelines • Use the Fusion GPS Pilot forum on Oracle Mix • Follow the Forum Rules posted there • Select “Post a Topic” and “Question” • About the forum • Private group • Very very simple functionality • No embedded URLs • No formatting • No file upload • You will receive invitations to join after the training

  22. Office Hours • Predicated by a forum post • For questions that couldn’t be resolved via forum exchange • Standard office hours – right after the weekly meeting

  23. Attend Weekly Meetings • Project updates • From Oracle Apps UX and LLNL • How’s the site working for you? • How’s the feedback process working for you? • Is there anything you need that you’re not getting? • Scheduled for 30 mins • Followed by Office Hours • Will schedule 1st one next week

  24. Wrap Up Meetings and Usability Evaluation • Wrap Up Meetings • Toward the end of our engagement with each team • Focus group/want and needs session • Usability Evaluation • Heuristic Evaluation • Usability study with your end users (if time permits)
