  2. Homework – Due Tuesday 12/10 • Find 1 current event article over the next 4 days (clip it out) and write a 1 paragraph reaction to the article. Does the article relate to any concepts that we have talked about in class? • Read “Geopolitical Framework” from pages 155-161. Fill out the Guided Reading for this section.

  3. Here is the plan… • Students will discuss current events articles in small groups. • Students will compare two conquistadors: Cortes & Pizarro. • Students will begin to understand the lasting impact imperialism has had on the region of Latin America.

  4. Compare • Two of the best known conquistadors Pizarro and Cortes from pages #453 – 454 in BLUE textbook. • What advantages did each possess over the native peoples?

  5. Cortes • Moctezuma felt he was the god-king Quetzalcoatl. • Allied with the Aztecs enemies. • Smallpox and other diseases. • Military technology

  6. Pizarro • Incas had just emerged from a civil war. • Military technology • Diseases • Used trickery to capture and kill the Inca emperor.

  7. Columbian Exchange • The global exchange of people, goods, and ideas that occurred between the Eastern and Western Hemispheres after 1492.

  13. Lasting Impact • Populations in Europe and Asia exploded in part due to the abundance of new foods available. • Can you imagine Italian food without the tomato? How about the Irish without the potato?

  14. Glory, Gold & God! • European missionaries began to spread their religious beliefs into the Americas. • The Roman Catholic church becomes a dominant force in colonial Latin America.
