Technology • Just push a button and get the class? • What do we want students to know? • How do we use technology to stay relevant?
“Millennials” and technology- “plugged in” generation
Working with your LIBRARY • Conduct an audit of your holdings in Psych/Soc • Obtain a copy of all requests/purchases made by your department in the past 5 years. • Ask a Librarian to come to a department meeting to demonstrate what resources are available for student research/projects (credible sources?) • Invite Librarian to your class to help at beginning of research project http://libguides.abtech.edu/behavioral Library Roadshow
New textbook possibilities • Soomo Publishing • http://soomopublishing.com/sle/#analytics • customizable, inexpensive, interactive
Problem: plagiarism Can we solve it by setting up our classes differently?
Possibilities or a curse? • Spice it up (infusing websites into existing courses using LMS like Moodle, Bb, etc) • “Old” fashion in new ways (use of film, group projects, and presentations)
Why? • Opportunityfor critical thinking (new media literacies) • Higher on Bloom’s taxonomy (apply, create, collaborate) • Global possibilities • It’s fun to add fresh content, stay relevant • Not just a FAD
Publisher websites • Don’t forget these links- easiest. Need login to Instructor Resources, can point students there (to Student site) or create link in LMS to discuss/summarize/connect to chapter • http://ewhighered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0078111641/student_view0/web_links.html
ASA and APA on course homepage • American Sociological Association • American Psychological Association • Connect the discipline info to occupations
Census.gov • American Community Survey (ACS)- infuse research gathering into a project (where to get data): • http://factfinder2.census.gov/faces/nav/jsf/pages/searchresults.xhtml?refresh=t • http://www.census.gov/people/ • Topics include: Well-being, families, computer use
Steering students to resources that make them THINK • Charlie Rose: The Brain Series: http://www.charlierose.com/view/collection/10702 • PBS “Inside the Teenage Brain”http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/teenbrain/ • Psychology Tests on BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbody/mind/index_surveys.shtml • Harvard Study of Adult Development: http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2009/06/what-makes-us-happy/7439/ • Open Yale Courses : http://oyc.yale.edu/ • TED talks:http://www.ted.com/
they use it outside of our classrooms, so... • Add photo to a paper (i.e. homelessness) • Hiller Spires of NC State advocates use of “grassroots video” for GROUP projects: • to “construct and create”, not passive • inquiry learning kits: flip camera with built-in USB, headphones, 1GB flash drive
Rethinking the Presentation • www.prezi.com (beyond PPT) • Digital Storytelling: http://www.storycenter.org/stories/ • Creating short films: http://www.cybersmartafrica.org/storytelling/gallery/ use campus IT department to help, can post these on course page, campus Youtube.com account, share with class
Using Film • Students like watching movies, can be a way to create links to our studies • Can be used for Discussion Board post or applied project/assignment • SOC: http://sociologythroughdocumentaryfilm.pbworks.com/w/page/17194965/FrontPage • PSYCH: http://www.psychmovies.com/ (Movie Lists and Instructor Resources) • Snag Filmshttp://www.snagfilms.comhttp://learning.snagfilms.com/film/category/college • PBS.org Frontline (free! use Teacher Center tab)http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/ Topics for educators (sights in Singapore, music in Iceland):http://www.pbs.org/frontlineworld/educators/culture.html

Creating connections • By directing students to particular websites, and exposing them to discipline specific information from sources that may be new to them, we can model good online research practices and media literacy • It can also prevent plagiarism if we keep changing the assignments and ask specific questions related to our chapters
www.wikispaces.com • Japanusa • collaboration • global connections: do not have to be expensive
New possibilities for instruction and assessment • Learning THROUGH technology, not just FROM technology • Direct students to specific websites, helping them make connections between our courses and contemporary debates or issues • Use technology to create and collaborate (students) and spice up online and F2F classes (instructors) • Share with colleagues- campus/department sessions • Library! What do you have? Use it!
