  2. Identify Your Key Audiences

  3. “I’m not surprised by the results of the study,” said Phoebe Leung, a health educator for the Stanislaus County Health Services Agency. “The county has also consistently had a high death rate due to heart disease.”

  4. “This idea that it’s an individual choice, this study really debunks that,” said Charlotte Dickson, obesity and diabetes prevention manager for Contra Costa County. “Where you live makes a huge difference as to whether you can really eat healthy food and what your risk of disease is going to be.” Contra Costa County officials have led similar food-access surveys in Concord’s Monument Corridor and in West County, especially Richmond’s Iron Triangle, its 23rd Street Corridor and North Richmond.

  5. “It’s the first generation that will have a shorter lifespan than their parents, especially because of obesity and chronic disease, which is largely attributed to diet. Unhealthy food is the norm,” said Charlotte Dickson, the Obesity and Diabetes Prevention Coordinator for the Contra Costa Health Services’ Community Wellness and Prevention Program.
