Characteristics of HIV infection epidemic in the Republic of Kazakhstan • The epidemic is at the concentrated stage. • Voluntary consultation and testing for HIV infection exceeds 10% of population annually. • The driving force of the epidemic is injecting drug abuse and parenteral infections (67%). • Every year the portion of the heterosexual ways of contraction dynamically increases from 5% in 2001 to 35,5% in 2009.
Situation on drug abuse • Number of injecting drug users (IDUs)according to rapid situation assessment – 124 400. • Number ofIDUslisted in the dispensary account at narcological centers– 38 071. • The spread of injecting drug abuse constitutes 1% among the population ages 15 and older. • The spread of HIV infection among IDUs - 2,9%.

Opoid Substitution Therapy (ОST) • Beginning 2008,a pilot project on OST was applied in 2 regions of the Republic funded by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria(211 000 USD) • OST is received by 50 people • PLHIVconstitute 60% out of them, for ART - 35% • Level of retention in the program is 74,3 %
Opoid Substitute Therapy (OST) • Beginning July 1, 2010, expansion of OST availability up to 200 people in 4 regions has started, at the expense of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, HIV and Malariaproject (460 000 USD). • Beginning 2011, expansion up to 1000 people in 20 regions is planned at the expense of the state budget.
