Rationale Important issues directly affecting our communities within the Consortium (FGM, Radicalisation, CSE, domestic violence, gang-related issues). A need for all schools in the Consortium to be delivering a consistent message around education in these areas to combat isolation and unwanted media attention.
Aims To develop a shared approach to Curriculum delivery from Early Years to Year 6, introducing topics in a sensitive and age appropriate way. A sharing of best practice in terms of resources and external agencies who can support school in this delivery (eg. Women’s Aid). To support schools working towards the Rights Respecting Schools Award to enable them to gather evidence and ensure the UNICEF rights of the child are incorporated into this work.
Initial Session Introduction to the PSHE Association suggested program of study in the absence of any NC requirements. Discussion of local issues in the area, individual schools’ approach to this, and how it impacts on Curriculum delivery. PSHE leads were asked to bring planning and curriculum maps currently being used in their school for discussion. Discussion of UNCRC Rights of the Child and how this could be used to support schools when dealing with sensitive issues. Discussion on their own roles as Leads and overcoming any barriers to PSHE delivery and provision.
Further Sessions Two further sessions focussing on specific phases (EYFS/KS1 and KS2) in more detail to examine how delivery could be adapted for different Year Groups. Assess and review session at the end of the year. Decision by group to continue as a network meeting termly through 2016-17.
Outcomes Main impact measure was by delegate feedback. All leads rated the sessions as “Good” or “Excellent”. Leads found the sessions very valuable for the following reasons: Felt more supported in terms of curriculum guidance, planning and delivery. Reduced feelings of isolation – “I don’t feel like I’m on my own any more!” Opportunity to network and share best practice. Continuation of network to provide further support and development.
